Is There A Point In Fighting 'evil"?

Featured Replies

How can you fight evil and win, without being evil yourself?

Good philosophical question there Jeff. However, Romans 12.21 "Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good."

I think that is even more interesting Suegha, for instance how could you overcome the evil of Nazi Germany with the power of Good.

Would you have authorized the bombing of a mainly civilian Dresden with little effect on the German war machine except the value of terror: or

The evacuation of Coventry before it was destroyed, having broken the Enigma code, but evacuation would have alerted the Germans to its breaking: or

The dropping of the Atomic bombs on Japan, to save an invasion that would have cost a possible million lives, considering the Russians lost an estimated 100,000 men just taking Berlin, not a completely fanciful estimate.

Excellent question Moss. However, not a question within this scriptural remit. The context of the passage is to overcome evil with good on a personal level. What scripture says is that all those 'evil' things will happen because people won't overcome evil with good. In other words scripture predicts all of those 'evil' things happening as part of the ultimate result, which is the return of Jesus to the earth to establish God's kingdom when all evil will be overcome with good.

As a good example, the bible clearly predicted the reformation of Israel, which most people thought impossible. Yet the holocaust, (amongst other events) was instrumental in the establishment of Israel which had ceased to exist for 2000 years. So that evil had a fulfillment in biblical prophesy.

Big subject answered as briefly as possible!

with the imminent risk of getting on very thin ice here...but was the reformation of Israel good or evil? I have my doubts...

Let's not define it in those terms. The bible clearly predicted it so it's in fulfillment of God's word. Ultimately though, it will be for the good.

This again would presume that the bible is right. Whether or not the bible is right is again based on belief and here we go again... :o

O.K taken out of context, but I reckon you are the only guy on here who could have interpreted it that, however as a body swerve to my question, Brian O'Driscoll would have been proud of it :o

Thin Raro, very thin :D

That's true, however, the bible clearly fortold the dispersion of Israel, 1000s of years before it happened and fortold its reformation, again, 1000s of years before it happened. And then it happened within living memory (if you're old enugh to remember 1948!). This, amongst other things, for me proves the veracity of the bible.

In fact I started a thread on it some years ago, I can't find the thread so I have posted the text below...

Israel restored – God promised it.

Israel ceased to be a nation for nearly 2000 years. Their removal from Judea had been foretold many years before as Moses wrote.

Deut 28.63-64... Just as it pleased the LORD to make you prosper and increase in number, so it will please him to ruin and destroy you. You will be uprooted from the land you are entering to possess. Then the LORD will scatter you among all nations, from one end of the earth to the other.

The land that once flowed with ‘milk and honey’ was to be made desolate. As Ezekiel wrote.

Ezekiel 6.14 So will I stretch out my hand upon them, and make the land desolate…

Persecution of the Jews followed as foretold by Deuteronomy and Numbers (amongst others.

Deuteronomy 28.37, and 65, 66 …You will become a thing of horror and an object of scorn and ridicule to all the nations where the LORD will drive you. 65-66 Among those nations you will find no repose, no resting place for the sole of your foot. There the LORD will give you an anxious mind, eyes weary with longing, and a despairing heart. You will live in constant suspense, filled with dread both night and day, never sure of your life.

It was prophesied by Ezekiel and Jeremiah (amongst others) that the nation would be regathered,

Ezekiel 36.24 For I will take you out of the nations; I will gather you from all the countries and bring you back into your own land.

Jeremiah 30.3 The days are coming, declares the LORD, when I will bring my people Israel and Judah back from captivity and restore them to the land I gave their forefathers to possess,' says the LORD.

And so after many historic events Israel was declared a state on the 14th May 1948 in fulfilment of God’s promises.

Its news to me as well, sure it must go on but to suggest its rampant suggests that Thailand is a very dark and evil place, not something I've ever felt or sensed in living here.

I wonder if that is why wife likes to call me daddy during sex? :D

Okay, that was bad, sorry. :D

OMG!! He is funny!! Never heard of him until now, but need to watch more of him.

Okay, I have been trying to study so I have been a little out of it. Let's bring it back to the OP. Is the a point to doing anything about the evil? Do enough to maintian balance? Try to rid the world odf whatever said evil? Just try to keep it away from yourself and loved ones?

Like ths guy I wrote about he wants to battle prostitution, lost cause, eh? So, is there a point to his efforts or of anyone else?

Deut 28.63-64... Just as it pleased the LORD to make you prosper and increase in number, so it will please him to ruin and destroy you. You will be uprooted from the land you are entering to possess. Then the LORD will scatter you among all nations, from one end of the earth to the other.

Was there a reason for this? I thought the Jews were God's chosen people...

Yes the Jews are God's chosen people, however, the chapter describes the blessings for obdience and their 'ruin' if disobdient. Guess what happened? Israel turned to idolatry and disobedience almost immediently after their redemption! Hence the prophecy...

That Old Testament God really was a control freak. If disobedience results in instant ruin and destruction, "Free Will" is a joke. :o

Not at all, you miss the point. Their restoration was also fortold. The first references were dependant on obedience, as the OT was the law for the nation, the latter, ie their restoration was post-Jesus where the fulfillment of the law was for the individual. And their restoration was conditional to, and pre, the second advent of Jesus. It's a big subject to study. Although a facinating one...

To keep it simple all of these events points towards the return of Jesus to establish God's Kingdom.

ps I don't like this 'OT God' stuff, it's the same God, both OT and NT.
