I recently purchased one of the C-motech CCU-650 to utilize CAT's EVDO CDMA technology. The technology is working greatly, except intermittently, I get disconnected. Sometimes I am able to stay on for an extended period, other times only 5-10 minutes. I might be in a border line area where there are 2 signals from 2 different base stations, but it's really annoying. Has anyone else experienced a problem like this?

Same problem here Matt. I'm on Cat CDMA and for the last few days its been hanging every few minutes and I have to log off and back on again.

Had the same problem a couple of months ago then it cleared up until a few days ago. I'm in northern Nan province.

Thanks for the response.

I'm using the ccu-650 with a 3m usb extension cable (essentially so I can place the internal modem antenna where there is better reception)...I'm thinking the usb extension might be part of the problem. I'm not convinced the signaling in the c-motech ccu-650 is fully usb compliant. Does anyone else use this modem with a 3m usb extension?

Do people using the Sierra wireless card also have this disconnect problem?

I have the CCU-650 as well. And one thing that's for sure is that this card is using lots of juice, most definitely more than the USB spec allows. It seems like a lot of USB ports on a lot of PCs have more power available than required for the USB spec. But others just fulfill the spec and so are too weak for power hungry accessories.

My MacBook Pro has two USB ports, one of them is weaker than the other one. The weak one (left) is unable to run one of my external USB powered hard drives and also unable to run the CCU-650. My PC laptop can run the CCU-650 for hours without getting disconnected. It's getting pretty hot though so I am sure it's using a lot of power.

The solution in your case is to get a Y cable - two USB plugs on one end, one on the other. That way you can use the power from two USB ports which will be enough for sure. Extender Y cables are available as well. If you are still getting disconnects with the Y cable, it's not because of power issues...

now if I could only figure out where to get a Y cable in the middle of Nongkhai/nowhere :o

Thanks for the info. a poster prior had asked this, but has anyone tried an external antenna for the ccu-650?

also, I purchased a 3m usb extension for the modem, I don't suppose anyone has tried 5m successfully? I'm assuming that on my thinkpad I will require a y cable for sure, since I'm already having disconnect problems on 3m.

thanks..glad to hear i'm not the only one in the world with this ccu-650 device.
