I've asked for a fixed line at "TT & T ", but they said to my that it do not have any more number available in this moment. I must waiting for 4 months ! (office in Samui).

Yesterday, a thai's guy who works for "TT & T" came at my office and he said to me : I have a number for you but you must pay 7 000 baht for it .

What do you think about that ? :o

Not a lot, but not unheard of I would say.

I asked for a line from TOT.

They came to check and told me there were no numbers spare for a phone line.

During the conversation I (actually my Thai wife) told them I didn't need a phone as I only wanted the line for broadband.

No problem they said and three days later I was connected ADSL only. 1400 baht deposit in Nathon, no separate line charge and just 599 baht a month inclusive.

I had the same situation about a year ago. We tried to get a line and were told none available for a few months, but given the option of taking over an old line with an outstanding bill. We paid 6k Baht but at least had a line in less than than a week. In our situation I think the "unpaid bill" story was genuine as the guy in charge of telephone lines here is my wife's friend.

Steve, where are you located exactly? Are you in Thong Sala? Because if you are then you could try for a TOT line. But otherwise, it sounds like a similar situation to the one Judas talks about. Probably an unpaid bill on someone's now cancelled phone.

I got a line thru TOT and I had to pay a deposit of 10,000 baht to the landlord and 500 or 1000 to have it hooked up.

What is the deposit for? Why you must pay money to have a line hooked up? Will you take the line with you after you move out?

Looks like the normal landlord-farang scamming :o

It's no scam, TT&T at Tesco also told us there was such a huge demand for lines we would have to wait at least 3 months (this was over a year ago). I offered 5k under the table if we could have a line earlier but to no avail. Now I realise I was being outbid by 2k!

I assumed the deposit was for in case I made a lot of overseas calls and skipped out on the bill. The phone line is in the name of the landlord and not me so that makes sense. Since I don't have a landline and only use it for Internet I expect to get it back one day. I got a receipt and they seem like really nice people so I'm not concerned with it.

We had a new TOT line installed very recently in the far south of Samui at Laem Sor.By Samui standards its quite isolated here and TT&T do not service the area. In our case there was no exisiting ADSL coverage down our Soi and we had to pay for over 1000 metres of dedicated cable to be installed to our front door.

The work was requested on a Friday and completed by the following Monday at a cost of 13000 baht.We were also given a phone line and number with no mention of any shortages.Perhaps this was due to the high cost of installation or maybe there are now new numbers available from TOT?

Steve is on Koh Phangan, not Samui and it is well known that in many places on the island TT&T will not install new numbers as the local box is full. Regardless of demand, it seems, as my neighborhood suffers from this despite the fact that I know at least 10 people who want landlines.

I realised that Steve was from KPG sbk but was just bringing other readers up to date with my recent experience regarding TOT and phone lines/numbers on Samui since some contributers on this thread are from Samui and have said that in the recent past there have been phone number shortages.

My understanding of TOT practices is that if you request a phone line you get one. I haven't heard of anyone not getting a TOT phoneline on this island.

My neighbor paid to have a TOT line run up from Hadrin so he could get DSL that works all the time, it was no problem for TOT even though he lives in a TT&T area. Of course, he paid quite a bit for it, but they put it in.

Do you think this is some kind of TT&T policy to not have new customers then? If it occurs on Samui as well, I find the idea of turning away new customers, well, an amazing business practice.

Steve, I had another thought about the 6000 baht cost. It sounds like the box near your house is full and he is planning on running a line from a further box, this does cost extra as you have to pay for the extra line.

See if you can get a TOT line before going this route.

I'm just next door the new restaurant : Green Planet in front of the entree of Suan Inn Bungalow. This is the new concrete building. I have two elephants in front of my office; My friend of the "Green Planet" has paid 5 500 last month and i has a fixed line, same my thai's neighbor.

I think that this guy take a commission for him

I know exactly where you are :o

I think you could get a TOT line there-- ask at the TOT office to make certain. Getting a TOT line in is generally alot faster than getting a TT&T line in. And should be cheaper than 6000 baht.

Actually, now that I think about it, alot of the bungalows just past (Siripun for example) you have a 377 prefix --which is TOT.

No reason to pay money for a TOT line. I am a landlord as well and I got the TOT-line for my new holiday home in 1 week. They even changed the 100 m line from the mainroad for free because we had unreliable ADSL connection.

Stop paying "under the table"!

Please SBK, you should not defend the corruption on these islands, 6.000 THB for extra line is under no circumstances a reasonable price.

Actually, I doubt it is corruption. TT&T does charge to run the line from a further box. If that is the case, and it sounds like it is, then he is probably paying for quite a distance of line. TOT also charges to run extra line--like to my neighbor who is not in a TOT area.

Yesterday morning I went to TOT in Nathon and I've opened my fixed line for 1 500 baht, stuff and installation included !

The technician must come in 2 weeks for the connection. No commission ! :o

TT&T are the big fuc_kers :D

Does everybody need a telephone line.

Most people just want Internet and use cellphone.

If somebody close to you have Internet, why not set up a network.

I can help you with that, just PM me.
