It's the home of the Thai-French Beef Company, IMO the best beef in Thailand. Has a small airport with at least one flight a day from Don Muaeng. Most of the major department stores eg Tesco etc. Typical Isaan Provincial hub.

One claim to fame and not very pleasent is they are well known for the way they dispose of unwanted dogs collected from the surrounding Provinces. Illegal but tolerated there.

Hi Moni76

Sakon Nakhon is in the upper Northeast. It is on the Phu Phan mountain range and has many forest temple retreats for meditation. Sakhon Nakhon is 647 kilometers from Bangkok and has an area of 9,605 squre kilometers. The province consists of 18 districts: Muang Sakhon Nakhon, Waritchaphum, Kutbak, Kusuman, Ban Muong, Phanna Nikhom, Sawang Daen Din, Wanon Niwat, Phang Khon, Akat Amnuai, Songdao, Kham Ta Kla, Toa-ngoi, Khok Si Suphan, Nikhom Nam-un, Charoen Sin, Phon Na Kaeo and Phu Phan. Sakon Nakhon is a town in Thailand within the Isan region, and capital city of the Sakon Nakhon Province. The city's name can be translated to international city. The city has a population of approximately 76,000. It has a regional airport in the north, Sakon Nakhon Airport. During World War II, the town became a haven for Free Thais, and a base for Communist activities in the late 1950s. Fish and rice are two of the largest products of the region. The biggest lake of north-east Thailand is situated north of the city, known as Lake Nong Han.. Got that off a couple of websites so don't know how accurate the population figures are, it also says the population of the whole pr

ovince is 1.1 million. There isn't too much in the "city" so if

you are visiting I wouldn't bother packing too many party clothes. Shopping isn't exactly varied unless you want spares for agriculural machinery.

I live in a village 50km outside the city and it used to be really dirt poor but things have improved a lot lately, we have a new hospital and school or maybe I have just got used to it. There is a Big C, Lotus and Macro in the city. If you want to know anything else just ask, as previously mentioned dog is also on the menu, the best being found in Thalae, so I have been told.

About Life in Sakhon Nakhon and Nakhon Phanom,

Provincial cities, with most of the commodities you may need. 3 supermarket in SN: Big C, Makro and Tesco. At few kilometers Thai French meat company whoseller of the best meat of Thailand, plenty of fish farms in the region, fresh water prawns, life is peaceful, people are pleasant, few expats, Universities, schools, Golf....well you can organise your life nicely and from time to time you can fly from the Airport to Bangkok for a week end shopping. Important christian presence in SN,

Hi Moni76

Went through Sawang Daen Din on the way to Udon, it is about 80km from Sakon Nakhon city and seemed to a reasonable sized town with a Tesco Lotus. Once outside the town, like the rest of Sakon Nakhon it is mostly rice fields Agree with Asianfrog, life is pretty laid back up here.

Cheers

Jim
