Anything in excess is bad for you...especially too much alcohol.

too much water and you drown..

Australian workplaces should have their proceedures for dealing with all chemicals on site in their material safety data sheets(MSDS). There is a MSDS for water.

No Doubt Stu- goes back to excess statement....

Personally I drink with the best of them, not good for me, but never the less I recognize it! :o

definately a drug as I am totally addicted... :o

*chang*

Alcohol is a Drug.... some people get addicted.... and it wrecks some peoples lives....

However this is a drug that is socially accepted to be "okay" by our society.

Think about the main population of some South American countries that chew Coca leaves daily.. this is accepted as ok by their society... but not acceptable in ours...! Even closer than South America are the Hill Tribes in Northern Thailand/Burma who grow and cultivate opium for their use... it is acceptable within their society but not ours.

Now.. take cigarettes for instance.... for a long time it was cool to smoke, now the way of thinking has changed so much ( in Western Countries more so ) that smokers get shunned and made to enjoy their vice in small rooms or "out of the way" so that their habit does not harm others... ( In Eire you can't even smoke in a bar ). So nicotine is a drug that society thinks is "okay" but not socially accepted.

Who decides which drugs are acceptable and which are not..eh..? :o

BTW - I drink loads...! :D

totster :D

i voted for 'NO'

once i read something similar to this, not sure where it from

maybe by some thai ALKIE writer

or maybe by some chinese ALKIE poet --โกวเล้ง (Kow Lieng)

he said.....

"I'm addicted to the trance of drinking alcohol rather than the alcohol itself!"

"ข้าพเจ้าไม่ได้ติดสุรา หากแต่ติดในบรรยากาศของการร่ำสุรา"

----------------------

this just clicked me!

coz i drink only when i'm joyful & feel like entertaining

Interesting point GFB.....

Now I know this is slightly off topic but I've heard a similar quote about smoking... it is claimed that the hardest thing about giving up smoking is what to do with the hands... the habit of holding a cigarette in your hands is the all powerful.

Maybe this is the same with alcohol... I don't normally drink at home and when I do it is not to excess... maybe I can't go to a bar without a nice pint of lager in my hand ?

Definitely a drug with the potential for disaster, but tasty nonetheless. Anyone can be an alcoholic...but to be a functioning alcoholic...well, that's mighty impressive considering the setbacks. I know only a few of those functioning alcoholics, perceptively coasting through precarious situations almost daily...and conscious of it all. I feel sorry for these ones.

The definition of insanity is repeating the same mistake over and over. Alcoholism = insanity on a chemical basis.

But, what's truly is crazy how society accepts such things while paying no mind.

Anyways...I enjoy a few beers, heck, some might even say more than that. Moderation is the key. Sound in theory, but difficult in the field.

Sorry for the rubbish.

Beer is good. :o

If alcohol is a drug then I am a drug addict.

I will not worry to much until I try to snort it or shoot it into my vains.

I always thought that a drug was a complex chemical - e.g. amphetamines (speed), lysergic acid diethylamide (LSD). So I didn't think of alcohol (ethanol, C2H5-OH) as a drug, because it is so simple (as a chemical compound, that is) even though it gives you similar effects.

Also, alcohol has been around for centuries and has become accepted as a form of inebriation that society tolerates. The "new" drugs (new to western society, that is) have not been given this 'acceptance', and so are considered 'bad' for society.

I also know my limit with alcohol (surprisingly low - 3 or 4 bottles of beer Singha or Chang), whereas with drugs I wouldn't know how much to take :D

I agree with "igotworms": it has the potential for disaster, but actually it is tasteless. I used to use pure "food grade" alcohol in a previous life, and it was excellent for adding to fruit punches at parties, without anyone knowing.... :o:D

Right... I'm just about to finish work... it's been one of those days and I could murder a pint or five... he he !! :D

Looks like I'll be stopping at the local for them five beers... should be able to fit em in before closing.... ( 22.30hrs plus 25mins drinking up time.. good ole UK laws eh..? )

woohoooo !!

oh, I can taste it. But when I stop tasting it, then its time to worry.

Alcohol is a drug, in the sense that it alters your physical and mental state.

Is it an addictive drug? To some - yes. The chemical reaction is one that occurs immediately and is necessary for the body to continue to function properly. (That is, one drink and you're back in the constant demand for more).

For other people, no. They can have a skinful one night, no need for any more for a week, a month, a year. Sometimes a pint or two a night for weeks, then no more for months. And no ill effects.

Tobacco, on the other hand, seems to turn everyone who partakes, however mildly, into an addict. And into a person who does not consider other people, but must turn-on whenever the urge takes him/her. Far more socially unacceptable IMHO. (But I'm an occasional drinker, a non-smoker) (Occasional drinker means some nights I have four or five pints, sometimes four or five successive nights, but then go for weeks or months without thinking of a jar).

As an x-smoker (smoked for 15 years) I can only conclude that tobacco is one of the crappiest drugs known to mankind.

The buzz you get is minor, and once you're off the addiction, you realize how you let those little buggers run your life.

I have never experienced addiction with any other substances, so I don't know what it would be like. I do feel the need for alcohol every now and then, and I do enjoy getting thoroughly pissed on occasion, a little too much for my own good I suppose. At least I can keep alcohol at home without drinking it for extended periods of time.

Alcohol is a drug without a doubt, according to the same definition Up2U uses.

I see no need for another definition. I really don't think the complexity of the active substance molecule has that much to do with it - it is a totally new thought to me, but maybe there is something to it..?

I voted yes.

However, I do believe that I am not addicted to alcohol as such. As the few people that know me here are aware, I like a few pints as much as the next alkie, but in the rare event that beer is not available, I could never drink spirits as a substitute. Could it be possible that I'm addicted to beer?

:o

I voted yes because of the above quote. Marijuana is a drug, well at least the THC is. How many stories have you heard of a husband beating up his wife and kids after smoking a joint? None I'd imagine. How many stories have you heard of a husband beating up his wife and kids after drinking a pint of gin? Plenty I'd imagine. Let's not fool ourselves here; it is a drug because it alters thinking and action artificially. A good book alters thinking, but it is natural.

This is a twelve *chang* Yorkie

Twelve, and you're still nearly upright, good man!

how many stories have you heard of a wife beating up her husband after he spends all night on thaivisa?

thaivisa, one of the most addictive drugs on the market

on the contrary,

how many stories have u heard of a hubby complaining his W.I.F.E. after she spending most of the time on thaivisa forum?

hi'

well well

so many different opinions ...

it seems that the "yes" is coming first :D

but as so many said, tobacco is really worst :D

it's definitly a real drug, might be for more psychological reason, in front of physical ones.

alcohol, is aslo a drug as it alters your mind, and so anyone could be addicted, either by habit, or by need.

this habit to have a drink when out of work could be more devastating than one could think.

as many knows, I usualy don't drink, for an obvious reason that some might have known reading some other posts ...

but, I have to say, that every now and then, I really enjoy to share a good beer with my wife, I mean by good beer, some like "Leffe", "Chimay" or some else that deserve the name of beer :D

and one bottle (75cl) is really enough, with a few olives and peanuts, it's a real pleasure.

I could not afford more than this ...

but, I understand that these after work or night partying drinking is a pleasure for many.

like some said, the real point is how to keep a limit ... pretty hard :D

it might be just a question of mind-strengh ...

I recall a sentence, "I do not drink for the taste of it, I drink for the joy of it, I drink because I love to be drunk"

also, some Chinese monk wrote a book (beautiful one), called "the Tao of wine" ...

wonderful texts and way of thinking ...

in our days, alcohol brings more damage than phylosophical thoughts ...

and it's a social thing (at least in western culture), and we all see Thais enjoying drinking

far beyond limits ...

somedays it made me worried ...

anyone is free, should we consider that alcohol is ok ... IMHO .... NO :o

but it's only my way

francois

ps; I voted "YES"

and as a medical statement ... more than 3 daily drinks begin to damage your health!

W.I.F.E.

What does this mean?

I will quote GFB from another thread.....

W.I.F.E. --W(ash).I(ron).F(uck).E(tc).

this is just the definition from my SIR HUBBY, he giving to ME!

thx to his 'creation'..... dirty bad joke

which of typical 'italian'

:D:D

I voted "Yes" to is Alcohol a Drug. As so much else in life, it can be regulated with a little personal responsibility. There is a theory that one may become an alcoholic or is more predisposed to becoming an alcoholic if one's parents are alcoholics.

But, as they say...Tham Jai Khun! :o
