i have tt&t maxnet 256/128 (which i think was actually doubled in speed late last year)... right now when i do a speedtest, my speeds are at normal level. however i can not access most international sites! (yahoo, facebook, BBC etc.)... or rather, i can access them but it takes them at least 5 minutes per page to download and even then most of the graphics are missing. sites like thaivisa and lonely planet load just fine. can anyone tell me what the problem might be? i can access my yahoo mail via phone just fine so i am guessing it is not an issue on their end. tt&t support is non-existent.

Have you tried to call TOT? I know their support sucks, but keep pushing them. It is possible it is one of the filters which they use to block certain sites. It may affect regular sites as well. They are not too smart so you better keep calling them several times a day.

Try:

start > run > cmd > nslookup www.yahoo.com

does this show you IP address?

also try in the same window:

ping www.google.com

to see if you get IP or response.

I had the exact same problem with Maxnet. After some research I downloaded DrTCP and saw that my MTU(Maximum Transmission Unit was set at 1500. I used DrTCP to change my MTU size to 1492 and all is well since.

Create a system restore point and also save your orginal settings with DrTCP in case you need to go back. I think I remember reading a post where someone had to change MTU to 1452 to load pages but 1492 will work for most people.

Must reboot for changes to take effect.

DrTCP can be downloaded at most reputable download sites but here is the link with info.

My husband talked to the TT&T guy in Surat Thani, apparently there is something wrong with the DSLAM box in Thong Sala so every TT&T user on the island's speeds are down. He said they are waiting for some parts to repair and it should be back up to speed by the middle of the month.

You might also try changing your DNS settings to ones from Open DNS in the tcp/ip settings of your internet connection.

oh ok thanks... i always get the "technician will call you back later" and when they do they say "try and restart your router" as if i hadn't done that 100 times already, and that is the extent of their "service". i hope it starts working sooner than mid-month because some international sites i have to access for work! i will try to change my MTU as well as DNS servers but for some reason they don't have settings for my router at OpenDNS.

Here in Samui I noticed something really weird : speed tests show downloads between 7 and 12 Megabytes with my poor Maxnet account.

Unfortunately, my real download is as slow as usual :o Anyone has an explication for this strange behavior ?

You don't have to change it at the router level but can do it in Internet Options.tcp/ip settings, properties

May the real measuring should be in bits instead of kbits?!

Try to run at same time a prog like BWMeter or DUMeter or some like that to control the "real" speed! I had similar once and use DUMeter at same time and the dusplay from speakesy was shown in kbits but the real was bits, seems to be a problem to display low speed in bits!

actually my MTU was already 1492 and I already had OpenDNS running... so neither of those helped. it is so frustrating, i can't check my email or use IM, which I need to do daily for my job. in the 3 years i have used MaxNet, they have never gotten their act together. they have absolutely the worst customer support of any company i have ever worked with. unfortunately i have no choice but to go with them where i live.

Strange, because I have no problems accessing international sites or email, yahoo, hotmail and gmail all worked fine for me this morning. I also use maxnet here on the island so have you checked something other than just your computer? Have you checked the phone box? Have you tried using a different router? We had a router damaged last year by power surges through the phone line, it still worked but painfully slow.

well they finally called back and told me to change the DNS settings to some new ones that they gave me and now it works fine... not sure what the problem was then.

RESOLVED

Today I again started again having problems with MyYahoo and Hotmail slow loading, formatting, etc so I did some further research. I have TTT 2048/512 Indie package and a Billion 5102S Router running IE7 andf XP Pro.

First I downloaded TZ Connection Booster and ran thru the wizard for DSL CONNECTION (NOT ETHERNET). I just clicked thru using the wizard's default recommendation. Then I rebooted. MyYahoo still slow but other pages faster.

Next I opened my browser and went into the BILLION router configuration page. Selecting the Interface Setup/Internet tab I went to the bottom of the page and changed the TCP MTU Option from the default 0 to 1492, Saved settings, went to Maintenance/Restart and restarted router using CURRENT SETTINGS.

Then rebooted computer and all pages including MyYahoo, Hotmail, etc load fast and completely.

Download Trackzapper Connection Booster

MTU 1500 is fine as long as MSS is 8 bits lower 1492.  Need auto detect in route it looks for narrow routers if you have fixed MTU and hit them you get mass package losses.  It will adjust on the fly. Try and find taz connection GUI it tells you what is set and recommends changes and provides back up setting.  It a user interface to your reg so you don't have to hack it. and you can back it out.  would give name of program and stuff but in my Lbox right now and can,t get at it.  Yes Open DNS always.

Edit twice this week I have forgot what I read before posting. I see you altready did all this.
