Surin province to cancel Elephant back marriages as a sign of respect for HRH Princess Galyani Vadhana

Local Administrative governor of Surin Province Thongchai Moongcharoen (ธงชัย มุ่งเจริญพร) revealed that the province has cancelled its annual Elephant-back marriage ceremony in respect for the passing of Her Royal Highness Princess Galyani Vadhana.

Mr. Thongchai said that the event, which draws in much tourism each year, is conducted in conjunction with the Tourism Authority of Thailand. He stated that the event was set to take place on February 14th at the Elephant village’s study center in tambon Krapo (กระโพ) in Tah Thoom (ท่าตูม) district. The yearly ceremony usually gives visitors the opportunity to conduct wedding ceremonies and sign marriage licences while riding on elephant backs.

Nonetheless, as the nation is currently mourning the passing of Her Royal Highness Princess Galyani Vadhana, the ceremonies will not be held this year.
