Before you lay the turf make sure the bed is smooth with no clods etc sticking up,then give it a real good saturating, next lay out the turf giving it a bit of a wiggle to get good contact with the soil.

then top dress over the new turf with a fine sifted dry sand or loam ( if available) and with one of those stiff brooms sweep over the turf.

The object is to work the top dressing sand/soil in until only the blades of grass are showing ,then a good watering and keep damp with regular sprinkling until the turf takes .

Fertilize with a liquid fertilizer diluted to a weaker ratio than recommended once a week , after fertilizing wait 30 minutes then give it a light sprinkle.

The 30 minutes allows the foliage to take up the elements in the fertilizer and the sprinkle after is to wash off any residue which may cause scorching by the sun .

On the recommendation of a Thai uncle-in-law, we spread some builder's sand to a depth of a couple of inches over the prepared and graded area that was to be the lawn. To my knowledge there are three types of grass available from the garden centres in Issan: Thai (standard), Malaysian (broad-leaved) and Nippon (fine and most expensive). I laid the Nippon grass (turf). After laying the turf fill in the cracks, hollows and smooth with more sand. This process as described by ozzydom can continue for several months. At this time of the year you will need to water daily, maybe even twice a day, until the grass is established. After the lawn is established, you will still need to look after the lawn on a daily basis, esepcially during the long dry season. The end result is well worth the effort and can be the envy of all. :o

I have done 2 lawns with the sod and both look great. As the others have said you need to properly prepare the area and keep the new sod watered. Do not let it dry out. The standard Thai sod does well in the sun but will grow thin or die in shady areas. The Malaysian (broad-leaf) sod in just the opposite. It does well in the shade and not so well in the direct sun.
