To understand Thai mentality a little will help you understand why large BBQs and the 1/2 Oil Drum are not sold on every Soi Corner. Fuel is expensive for the average farmer so they will cook using as little fuel as possible, this is part of the reason that stir fry is common - because the food is cut small to cook quickly.

Having a large BBQ is considered industrial cooking, you can get them cut to order from places that have oil drums, look around semi industrial areas you will see a pile of drum, go talk to the owner. I bought one for 300 Baht.

Small "home" BBQ units, made from a large tin (20" diameter) infilled with a fireclay to rest a cooking pot or BBQ grill on will cost about 180 Baht from domestic hardware stores.

Small bags of cooking charcol costs about 20 Baht a bag, large sack are sold at the road side upcountry for about 150-200 Baht.

When you are all set up, go looking for the local pig farmer, get one slightly longer than the oil drum as it is best to cut off the head and lower legs and cook those bits in the pot with "chinese" spices. Mash up some pineapple to marinate the meat for a few hours before cooking on teh BBQ.

And finally invest in a small flood light to see the meat as it is being cooked on the BBQ, although it looks nice, quaint and romantic with the orange embers glowing in the clear Issan evening eating poorly cooked pig really screws up the following days, and I'm sorry to say this is experiance speaking. Have fun.

I bought a 44 gallon drum at one of the many recycle places around Buriram for 50 Baht and had my friendly neighborhood mechanic build me a BBQ. He only wanted me to invite him for the first BBQ.

Also, I built my own smoker. All the details HERE.
