Thinking off stopping in Samui for a week or so on my next visit to Thailand and the guys in the Phuket sub forum were very helpful in helping me with my trip there in November and I was thinking maybe you could do the same. I was told that Samui is similar to Pattaya which is not ideally the place I am looking to go to. I don't mind a few Soi's here and there with a few ladies doing the business but is the place like Pattaya were its raining old men with young girls? Or would it be more similar to Phuket, Patong were there is a few places you can go for that stuff but also caters to the people who dont want all that crap?

You have Soi Green Mango, where the girlie bars are, other than that a few in Lamai etc,but not at all like Patters. Samui at the moment is like one big building site, lorries clog the roads, mud and dust everywhere, along with the Taxi Meter Scum rip off merchants. If i were you i would stay in Phuket :o

There is no building in Phuket, apart from all the other stuff you mention ?

You are exaggerating that the whole of Samui is 'one big building site'. It's like comparing Patong Beach with a deserted beach in North Phuket.

Apples and pears...

What are your holiday aims? Relax on beach? Night life? If you point out your choices, you might get a fairer indication to help you make up your mind.

I haven't been to Pattaya yet but from everything I've read on this forum I would believe they are nothing alike.

The girlie bars are mainly in Chaweng around Green Mango and Soi Reggae but nothing on the scale you find in Patong. Also in Lamai and on a much, much smaller scale in Bangrak. All easily enough to avoid if you aren't interested in it. Fisherman's Village is nice and totally without girlie bars.

Saying Samui is one big construction site is an exaggeration. Where I am they are doing a lot of road work which is definitely needed. But in Chaweng, Fisherman's Village and other places there isn't as much.

Phuket/Patong is much bigger than Samui so there will be much more to do there. The infrastructure in Samui is lacking and the taxi drivers should be ****. While on Samui you can take the ferry on over to Koh Phangan for something a little different.

Well sounds like some prefer to make their holidays on the Main Road and on Constructions sites...

However, there are plenty of "cool" places around, depends on which beach you like to stay, Mae Nam f.E. is (for Ko Samui) a rather remote, isolated beach, there are very few bars, concentrated on the main Road and 3-4 on the road leading to the Lomprayah Pier.

there are a couple of good restaurants, a Sports bar in town itself.

But as you mention November, would be the rainy season and bad weather will be guaranteed!

Samui is hanging onto what it was by it's fingernails. Even 10 years ago the island would still have been considered ideallic, but uncontrollable development has just about ruined it. Infastructure hasn't kept up with growth so there is rubbish everywhere, and the roads are horrendous, slightest drop of rain and the roads are flooded. Locals have been faranged out and generally tend to have bad attitudes. Crime is on the increase and the local mafia have a firm hold on what goes on.

On the flip side. Samui still has some good pockets. The Choengmon beach area is nice. Fishermans village is the pick for restaurants with atmosphere. Nice to explore the back side of the island and up the hills. Chaeweng is still worth a visit and can be good for a night out.

It's small, very much a shorts and t.shirt destination and can be fun. Just avoid the wet season.

Koh Samui is a great place for holidays - dont listen to the old farts here who are complainig about infrastructure and busy main road, these are problems for locals and for farangs who are doing business here. I rent a holiday home since ten years and never -NEVER- a customer was complaining about the infrastructure of the main road. Scaming? You find scaming in Phuket, Pattaya, Bangkok and here, thats Thailand.

Holiday in Samui is: Great beaches, an amazing choice of good restaurants, shopping for whatever you want and dont need.

Just dont come here in november!!

My family (2 teenagers and wife) want to go on holiday in June or July at the beach for a week or so. I have been pointed to a resort called Hanalei Gardens in Ban Tai. Can any of you locals give insight to the area, transport around island, etc. Greatly appreciated.
