stumonster Posted October 12, 2004 Posted October 12, 2004 "Techweb is reporting that a new worm that spreads via Microsoft's instant messaging client began badgering users Monday, several security firms said. Dubbed Funner, the worm propagates by sending itself to all the contacts listed in the user's copy of MSN Messenger, Microsoft's IM client. There is an analysis on Symantec Security Response Site; apparently the worm tries to download stuff from www.78p.com and adds entries to the hosts file pointing to more that 400 Chinese porn sites. The worm also sends itself to the whole contact list as funny.exe so it requires the user interaction to actually execute it. " http://www.techweb.com/wire/security/49900742 Instead of using messenger ,yahoo chat, icq , AIM you could use trillian www.trillian.cc ( my personal choice ) gaim http://gaim.sourceforge.net/ just whatever you do, don't click on .exe files , specially funny.exe
mbkudu Posted October 12, 2004 Posted October 12, 2004 This is interesting Stu. I just got a new McAfee anti-virus software, Virus Scan, and now all the contacts in my MSN Messenger are gone. It says I have to reestablish the contacts. I've just ignored it for the moment because I don't mind checking my email manually. After what you have just said, I won't bother with it for awhile. Thanks for the warning.
stumonster Posted October 12, 2004 Author Posted October 12, 2004 the really humorous part is, "Associated Press reports that China's police ministry on Sunday handed out rewards of up to $240 to people who reported pornographic Web sites in a campaign to stamp out online smut...The online crackdown is part of a sweeping official morality campaign launched this year on orders from communist leaders." http://www.newsday.com/technology/business...ology-headlines $240 x 400 = a nice little earner.
kabal1234 Posted October 12, 2004 Posted October 12, 2004 Good to be aware of but again, let's not get TOO paranoid folks. As the article said. "Both Symantec and rival McAfee have labeled Funner as a low-level threat for the moment."
