Does Anyone Have Information About That Phanom

Recommended Posts

We will be back in Ubon during the New Year thru the end of January 2009.

The list of places the wife has on her list to visit includes That Phanom.

I have never been there so we would appreciate any help available to understand the city including hotels, food establishments, and local attractions.

All I know is that it is located north of Mukdahan and south of Nakhon Phanom.

Any help or direction would be greatly appreciated.

Hi ChiefBEM

That Phanom Has No hotels

The nearest would be either Mukdahan Or Nakhon Phanom

There are 3 resorts to stay at in That Phanom

1 being the Kritsada Resort which is on the banks of the Mekong river the owner being called

Sompop

We have stayed there on numerous occasions for upto 3 months at a time while our

home was being built

The accommodation comprises of bungalows and chalets prices start from around 300 baht a

night and are well kept being cleaned every day, We would definitely recommend this resort

The larger Bungalows are around 600 Baht a night which have a large Bedroom, Sitting room,

Kitchen area and hot shower.

All accommodations have European toilets

The other two i dont know the names but 1 is when you arrive in That take a left along the

Bypass road and there is a new resort on the right hand side about 1 KM along

The other is at the rear of the old bus station and looks very nice small chalet accommodation

priced around 400 Baht

Things to do here are quite limited

The Temple here is one of the finest in all Thailand especially on an evening

There is a small Market starting around 16.00 every day near the Temple and there is a

covered market close to the 711 store opening at 4.00 am closing around lunch time

There is a market every 3rd day were people from Laos come over the Mekhong to selll there

wares

I would highly recommend a trip to this market but it starts around 6.00 am and finishes

around 10.00am, Located around 500 meters from Kritsada Resort on the banks of the

Mekhong

There is a National Park near Mukdahan worth a look its got a great waterfall but quite a hike

Lots of restaurants & bars along the Mekong 2 being Floating the better belonging to the

Kritsada Resort

I hope you have a wonderful time when you visit That Phanom the People are great

and you will see the real side of Isaan life

Shaggs

Shaggs,

Thanks for all of the information.

My wife went to elementary school in That Phanom and remembers the going to the Wat on a regular basis.

She does not have any family or friends that she remembers still living in That Phanom.

She moved to Ubon around age 11 or 12. She is now 58 years old and she has visited Thailand over 20 times in the last 37 years but we always stayed with her mother and family in Ubon.

Her mother passed in January of 2007.

Now she wants to visit the places she lived when she was a little girl and places that she never could find time to visit because she spent all of her time with her mother.

We will have relatives in Ubon contact the Kritsada Resort to make reservations. We are planning on only staying 2 nights but that is flexible.

My wife's name is Supaporn and her nickname is Dtoy.

We have been married for over 37 years.

I worked and lived in Thailand from early 1968 thru August 1971 as a member of the US Army. Initally assigned in Bangkok but further assigned to temporary duty in Ubon for 3 years.

My last trip to Ubon was in September 2006.

How long have you been living there?

You can PM me and we can talk via email if you would like.

Thanks again for all of the information.

We have airline tickets and will be arriving in Bangkok on December 30, 2008 and leaving Thailand the end of January 2009.

We are trying to do something different for this visit.

"PLANNING"

The wife does not believe much in planning.

She just likes to go and not be tied to any schedules or even general obligations.

This time (for some odd reason) she is going along with a light form of planning so we can ensure everything/place she wants to see can happen during our stay.

We will have to firm-up at least the first 10 days of the trip very soon because of the problems in getting reservation during the New Year's 7 - 10 day holiday period.
