I purchased the GPS unit for my PSP...problem is it requires at least 3 satellites in order to calculate your position. I've only been able to connect to 3 satellites in one location...on my balcony. For driving it is absolutely useless, i was unable to get a position all the way home from MBK to Ladprao.

Has anyone else bought one of these, is there some special thing i need to do in order to get better reception? I have a good mind to return it as it seems to be a real piece of crap and cost me 2000 baht.

GPS relies on line of sight reception. You probably need an external antennae or a clear view of the sky at least. In my airplane I have a handheld GPS mounted on the dash and it works fine without an external antennae, but it many planes it won't work without one.

Hmmm i didn't realize that, i figured it would work on some kind of radiowaves that would go through stuff... bummer...

I guess i'll try getting an extension cord for the GPS receiver and sticking it on the windscreen or something.

Still there is not alot of open sky when driving in Bangkok with all the highways, skytrain, tall buildings etc...

Do you have tinted films on the windows of your car?

Yes but only 40% on the front, would this affect it?

If you have a metallic tint, the unit won't see through it. I have two Garmins and both lose the signal when I am on the bottom road under the expressway. Both have no problem on regular Bangkok streets.

I'd guess that at certain times of the day it won't see the satellites from your balcony either. Depends where they are at. If you can sit the receiver on the hood of your car, that will tell you if it is working properly. Mine normally sees five or six satellites.
