The Diesel On Gas dual fuel system can be fitted to turbo-charged diesel engines and provides a means of substituting diesel fuel with alternative fuels such as LPG and CNG. The system uses a combination of proven automotive gas components with an electronic control system to provide an efficient and reliable alternative fuel delivery. The system can be fitted without significant engine modifications.

.........

Has anybody heard about this in Thailand ? A Thai guy in my soi is talking about having it fitted to his diesel pickup. he said they can run on a 50/50 diesel LPG mix :o

Not aware of anywhere actually doing small-engine conversions, but I'm definately interested for my diesel Ranger. If your chap gets it done, try to get details, costs etc.

I did see a Fortuner (marked up as D4D) with what looked like NGV/LPG tanks mounted under the rear floor. It was on the highway so not possible to tell if it was diesel dual-fuel or converted to petrol engine. The tanks did no good for the ground clearance, I certainly wouldn't want to take it off-road.

I remember a few months ago (maybe more) in I believe Canadian paper that GM in Thailand was going to launch a pick-up that would burn diesel or natural gas, haven't seen anything else since. Issangeorge.Okay i guess it was more than a couple of months, I found the link. http://www.greencarcongress.com/2006/08/us_energy_provi.html according to this GM should be selling a Diesel/Natural gas pick-up now, does anybody know if they do?

,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,.

Ok Crossy I will ask him for the more details next time I see him, as far as I know now a system has been fitted into a Toyota Tiger, they are going to fit one in a Mitsubishi Strada, I know the guy with the Strada well and if the setup is sucsessful in his I will think about fitting it in mine, the cost for the mixer valve, sensors and tank is 7000 baht, I think the tank is second hand ? :o

Chevrolet Colorado is available in dual fuel version. I think I came across a company that does the exactly same conversion aftermarket, the cost is about 160,000 baht. I believe they use the same original kit, from some Italian company.

Unless you really drive a lot, it's not worth it.

I don't think you can make a diesel engine "dual" fuel capable, as in 100% NGV and 100% diesel capable.

AFAIK, diesel needs high compression to ignite, NGV, much like petrol, needs an electric ignition source, and due to similar octane properties as petrol, could never stand the high compression as found in diesel engines (NGV/air mixture would ignite way before the piston would reach TDC).

Yup, the 'dual fuel' engines need either pure diesel or diesel plus LPG/NGV. The diesel injection starts the combustion process just like the spark in a petrol engine. The gas 'assists' the reduced quantity of diesel injected.

This means that the savings of using LPG/NGV are more limited than they would be running on pure gas.

LPG/CNG enhanced Diesel engines have been in Thailand for about 5 years and typically in the past were seen as a performance enhancement. Back then it was possible to get a 10-20% dynoed increase in power which we used in racing pickups.

Today everyone is rightly interested in economy and a properly installed and driven system will give you 10-20% less Diesel usage. One small tuk tuk LPG tank will be good enough for 5 tanks of diesel.

Yes their are gains to be had but less than a straight Petrol to LPG conversion.

You can also do a total diesel to gas conversion and replace the injectors with a sort of spark plug (igniter) and put a large decompression plate as a cylinder head gasket and yes you can then use only CNG/LPG. Yes you do lose a bit of power and torque! You cannot use diesel then!

Of course you are then limited to using only CNG/LPG and that is not the sort of thing you can buy in many back country places in Thailand, which means you need to plan your trip a bit more carefully around fuel.

Very interesting read, when you say (we used in racing pickups) did you use it in Thailand or another country ?

This was all done in Thailand with some Australian technology and knowhow. There are now a number of people that do this for economy to give the same power but a 10-20% saving in fuel usage! Of course many people just want the power.

Yes we still do racing pickups! Now we HotBits Thailand specialise in manufacturing and fitting high end monotube rebuildable shocks for some cars, but specifically for racing pickups. 90% of all racing pickups in Thailand use our suspensions. Multi valved 3" shocks with remote canisters really make standard Bilstein's and Koni's look silly!

Very cool shocks in every way.

Hi guys, i have an asnwer to all you quiries on the diesel to Gas conversion. This guy i know has the systems needed to convert diesel engines to gas dual fuel. It won't be dedicated but it will use a mixture of diesel and gas. 60% NGV and 40% diesel. or 50 % LPG and 50% diesel. he has a contact number which is 0890535457. he will give you more information. and also has a garage to convert as well.
