Buying A Cheap New Car

Featured Replies

I find myself in a situation where I really need to buy a car. Have managed without for a year or so but now find that renting for a week every month costs as much as the payments would be on an HP deal (almost anyway!). Previously had a Jazz which was great but I don't like the styling of the latest incarnation and really don't want to spend quite that much anyway. As most of my journeys will be on the open road up to the North East I am leaning towards a manual (better mpg as well) with the Honda City V MT looking quite good at 526000Baht. Opinion seems divided between Honda & Toyota and I would appreciate hearing from owners with first hand experience of the City & Vios.

New model of City coming soon:

Well that looks like a better restyle job than they did on the Jazz but is it what it will really look like when it arrives? No doubt a new model will also come with a new price tag!!

In the new jazz, the auto actually returns better fuel consumption than the manual (offical figures, and not real world ones though). I think there won't be that much of a difference, especially if you are taking long highway trips. You won't have to find out what the final drive ratio is - high rpm at highway speeds will use more fuel. But then again, it won't be a pain to drive a manual upcountry, but it will be in town. Also, the manual jazz (not sure about toyota), doesn't have abs/srs airbags either. It might be worthwhile to see what the new city is like and test drive it.

Interesting point about the fuel economy of the new Jazz, I was thinking back to a couple of Civics I had in the Uk where the difference between Auto & Manual was around 8mpg in favour of the manual. As far as driving in town goes I'm with you all the way but as I'm looking to keep the cost as low as possible the 40k I can save on manual/auto is just another consideration. Abs and airbags are also nice to haves but rarely on the vehicles I hire so I take the view that if I buy a car without them I'm no worse off than I am now! Thanks for the input though.

but is it what it will really look like when it arrives?

Doesn't look like too much change apart from the front end which appears much more like a Civic (no bad thing) but are these the final pics of what it will look like or is it still in development stage?

Hmm? Maybe special promotion on current model....now you're talking my language!!

That would be nice but I've never seen discounts on run-out models here. Honda have been very hush on the new city for this reason. They don't want people to stop buying the old model; though the new one is apparently due at the end of the year. It seems reasonably to give discounts but I haven't seen this from honda, not in this country anyway.

For old Accord they had 0% financing promotion

I went into the Dealer on Sukhumvit in Pattaya yesterday, they only had one of the old Civic's left, no deal available, not really even interested in selling to me, just wait for new model in November. 3% Finance available to foreigner with 25% deposit and Thai Guarantor.

With the Jazz they sold all the 'old' ones long before the new one arrived

Did you mean to say Civic? Sounds like you are talking about the City.
