"Floodwater rises continuously in Nong Khai

Water levels in the Mekong River is rising continuously, resulting in flooding in Nong Khai province.

Officials of the Department of Water Resources report that water levels in the Mekong River near Nong Khai province have reached critical levels at 12.85 meters, and is expected to rise higher. The Nong Khai Office of Hydrology believes that the river's level will rise to 13 meters tomorrow (August 13). Households, temples, schools, and agricultural land in Si Chiang Mai (ศรีเชียงใหม่), Tha Bo (ท่าบ่อ), and the Mueang Nong Khai districts have suffered extensive damage.

Local officials are building sandbag barriers in several districts in order to stem rising floodwater but have proven unsuccessful so far. Water pumps are deployed in the Nueang Nong Khai district and are operational 24 hours. Aid centers have also been established for flood victims by the Nong Khai Disaster Prevention and Mitigation Office, the Nong Khai Red Cross Branch, and local foundations. "

Lots of talk on the local forum about this beginning to sound pretty serious.

It's raining in Surin too. We have now had over 100mm of rain within the past 36 hours and it's still pouring down. If the rain does not let up soon I guess there will be widespread flooding all over the northeast of Thailand.

"Many areas in Nong Khai flooded

The water level of Mekong River is approaching the critical point. Many areas on the riverbanks have been flooded.

Chief of the Nong Khai Hydrology office, Suwit Buaphern (สุวิทย์ บัวเผื่อน), reports that the water level of Mekong River is raising following heavy in the lower part of China and the upper part of Thailand. At 08.00 hrs today (August, 12th), the water level measured in Nong Khai province is 12.76 meters, slightly below the critical point of 13 meters. Mr Suwit says water from Mekong River will flood Mueang Nong Khai Municipality if the water level reaches the critical point.

Meanwhile, Mueang Nong Khai Mayor Songphon Kowitsirikul (ทรงพล โกวิทศิริกุล) says the municipality has closed all drainages connected to Mekong River and installed ten 8.12 inches pumps across the municipality area to release water around the clock. He says the municipality has warned people to move their valuable properties to a safe place and build sand-bag flood barriers.

Nong Khai has continuous heavy rain for many days and many areas have been flooded. "

Teelack is off in Sri Bun Ruang visiting mama for the 12th, returning tomorrow.

She tells me it's been raining in Nong Bhua Lamphu Province but no problem with flooding so far.

Hopefully that old fan bus she'll be on will have water wings! :o

Hi All,

I was planning to drive across the bridge to Vientiane tomorrow (Monday 18 August). Does anyone know if this is possible or not - I mean are floods preventing vehicles crossing or not?

Thanks.

JB.
