Do you mean that you only have 6000B for your whole trip or just to get to the north? It depends on how long you want to stay and what you enjoy doing really. If you're going to go out partying every night 6000 won't last you a week but if you're planning on living modestly then it should see yu through a week easily.

There are so many pleasant places in the north that its hard to know for sure where to start. I like Pai, Chiang Rai, Lamphun, Lampang and Tak.

One word of warning though some the nicest places in the North have become full of backpackers on their ethnic hilltribe spotting treks. If you can stomach Sophie and Crispin spouting about their 'authentic hill twibe exthperwintheth' then you should be ok almost anywhere.

The nicest place I know for hills and mountains is Loei Province in the North East. No smelllies in sight.

If mountains and forests are really what you want o see then I recommend northern Laos over Thailand 10 to 1. I live in northern Thailand and it is beautiful here and you can have a really great time seeing the scenery and I do recommend coming and seeing it but if you really want to see remote mountains and forests then its definitely Laos....definitely

Laos is fantastic, but 6000 baht won't take him far if he's going from Bangkok to the remoter parts of Laos.

I'd also recommend Loei province (same as professor Fart) or the area around Mae Sariang or Um Phang for good trekking and unspoiled scenery. If you want an all-included package and trek with larger groups, go to Chiang Mai, Chiang Rai or Mae Hong Son (Pai).

If you eat local food at markets and noodle shops, and don't drink alcohol (well, Sang Som or Lao Khao will not be too expensive) your 6000 baht can last you a good week. Most organised treks tend to be a bit too expensive if you are on a tight budget though. You can save some money by asking around, both other tourists and in the travel shops.

Tea Totaller,

You can see them growing tea at Mae Salong in the nortahern part of Chiangrai Province. They are chinese kwomintang(spelling?) who fled china when the communists took over.

Mae Salong is one of the few places where I would like relocate to. Only spent a day there but will definately be going back again to check things out.

Tea Totaller, if it's just mountains and forests that you're after, there is no need to go all the way up to the north.

Sangkhlaburi area of Kanchanburi has a few remote mountainous places and is much nicer going to and from there. Not many tourists either.

Great place to visit but if you are on a bike take some packets of fags (Je ne fume pas ) for the nice policemen/burmese freedom fighters who will probabally stop you half way up the mountain.

Also watch the weather since it changes quickly and gets ...whats that word...COLD.

If you ever get stuck you can crash out in one of the little wooden huts where they keep the ....err nice poppys. :D

Last time I was up in that neck of the woods (10 plus years ago)there was only one decent hotel but lots of flophouses...should have improved by now.

The story of the chinese kwomintang is really facinating one lot went to Taiwan (Formosa)and formed the government with the old Generalisimo C.K.S while this crowd did a body swerve to Thailand post 1949.....

I believe they only got their I.D cards/Thai citizenship about 5 years ago. :o
