Rawai To Kata - Attacks Again

A friend just informed me tonight that a friend of ours was attacked around 10pm on that infamous hill. This time coming from Rawai past the well lit view point and down the hill.

They kicked her off her bike and when her bike hit the rails it alerted some of the locals living near buy. i think she fell and then the locals (good guys) came and the bad guys (locals?) took off.

Scarry shit. I dont know if she alerted the police/press in order to at least warn others but i thought I would post it.

Also a friend of mine said in the Nai Harn she had 2 guys on bikes chasing her the other night. She was quite ahead and as she sped up they sped up ..she had to turn on a side street and turn her lights off.

Low season is officially HERE! I hope somone warns the tourist!!!!!!

This is why I won't ride my bike anywhere at night other than Phuket Town.

Seems yet again farangs alone on bikes at night are fair game

So

Only ride in pairs

Carry a small cosh/spray

If you have to use that route, take a taxi as a protection

Take the long way round if possible

get a more powerful bike.

As the friend was female, could this have been something other than the usual mugging attempt, but more towards the other type of crime? If so, even more distressing news.

Get it into the Phuket Gazette - this type of publicity is the best way to put more pressure on the authorities to do more...

Bad news again.Hope the lady is OK

I'm afraid I travel with a baseball bat in the truck now.

Read these two articles yesterday and had to smile have you seen the state of some of the police vehicles and they are going to give them helicopters to play with and where are they going to put cameras in Rawai. They are not going to be much use on the dark back roads where most of these attacks take place.

Well, installing a 20 million Baht CCTV system sounds good....but in this case I think it`s a waste of money and could instead beeing spent actually policing/patroling this area !! From a proffecional experience I know that a CCTV system is as good as the person(s) operating them and in this case this will be a total waste of money !!!

I think it will be wise to stock up with one of these http://www.tbotech.com/telescopicbaton.htm for future bike rides in certain areas :o !!

Probaly not the wisest of moves.

It was a dark side street and her tactic seemed to work. She saw the little F*'s drive past

thats crazy, i didnt know about these attacks but i probably drove that route back and forth everyday at pretty much all times of night for about a month (july - august) and never had any problems. Do they follow you or just sit and wait?

errrrrrmmmmmmmm- you missed the point.

@ 20% comission = 4 m Baht in the decision makers pocket ( in a typical scenario ). So who cares if it works !

They try all methods, and it usually ends up with getting kicked off your bike - beaten with a stick if your lucky, shot with a gun if your not - either way its gunna hurt - and for what?

Maybe a few baht in the bottom of your wallet / purse.

Am not going to go on one of my usual rants about this - The police are a JOKE and always will be.

choppy

And they never "caught' the bastards. Tourist need to know.. should be big warning signs!!!

I recommend to at least read www.phuketgazette.net to get some idea of what happens here.

if you have lived in phuket for at least a year, or perhaps even followed this forum for that long, then you would be well aware of the fact that this particular stretch of road is extremely dangerous at night. it's no secret that during last low season both tourists and foreigners alike were violently attacked and/or mugged all over rawai and sadly, the norweigan man was stabbed and killed on the hill. that being said, and i am not trying to sound preachy and/or bitchy, one would assume that someone would have enough common knowledge to not drive on that road at night.

i am sorry about your friend, i really am, but the problem with discussions like this is that they can be easily avoided. keep your common sense about you...if you know a particular area of the island is dangerous after dark, then avoid it. and if you can't avoid it, then try to make sure you don't leave by yourself.

i live in rawai. i drive a scooter. and i like to come home late at night. and yes, i have been followed home by a group of punk ass thai kids late at night on more than one occasion. so, this is what i've done...i've implemented a buddy system. whoever i've been with or maybe one of the local bartenders and i will follow eachother home just to be safe. you'll notice that recently late at night there are police stationed near the thai club icon on the hill way to kata as well as in the 7-11 at the junction between nai harn and kata. are they going to do anything? i don't know. it's doubtful. but at least they are there.

keep your senses about you and try to avoid that road to kata from nai harn late at night and hopefully you'll make it home alright.

___ UPDATE____

I just got first hand knowledge from the actual girl who was attacked. She is ok but has a few broken ribs by the way.

She said that actually another girl was attacked around 7pm, a tourist. she was the 2nd person to be done in that night. She said that it was an older silver motorbike, and an older guy and younger guy with long hair, perhaps and only PERHAPS a father son team, or so the ages seemed to imply and that the faces were very familiar. ...

She said as they grabbed her bag they could not get it and THEY crashed into the railing and wiped out. At this point to she was also off her bike. They got back on their bike and drove away. She went to the karon police box but they, ever so concerned-not, told her to go to Chalong. She was injured and did not go to Chalong that night .The next day she, with a Thai friend, called the police in Chalong but they did not come.

I guess they were busy with more important matters at hand.

With her permission I have forwarded the info to The Gazette and I hope they run a story, at least as a warning to others...

So look out for an older silver motorbike Near the "snake farm".
