September 3, 200817 yr Art gallery in court over 'Jesus with erection' An art gallery in Britain which exhibited a statue of Jesus Christ with an erection was taken to court by a devout Christian on Tuesday who said she was offended by the work and argued that the gallery would "not have dared" to portray Mohammed, let alone in that way. The artwork was part of an exhibition at Baltic Centre for Contemporary Art in Gateshead, near the north-eastern city of Newcastle, which featured dozens of plaster figures including Mickey Mouse, ET, and Jesus - all with erections. The items were shown in a presentation a year ago of works by controversial Chinese artist Terence Koh. Link
September 3, 200817 yr Would you be prepared to pay money to this idiot to find out? Absolutely not. My earlier comment pretty much describes what I think of this so called art. I'd love to hear what eek thinks about this.
September 3, 200817 yr I just see it as a sign of the times. The point being made about them not showing a Muslim prophet is valid, but really they shouldn't show either. The debate as to whether it's art or not will continue to rage as long as there's art. I wouldn't ban it however, I would just make it known what's on show and then allow people the choice to go see it if they wish.

September 5, 200817 yr My earlier comment pretty much describes what I think of this so called art. I'd love to hear what eek thinks about this. Personally Im getting a little tired of Art that is out to shock. Of course im all for Art movements and viewing new ideas and pushing boundaries, but for me this one comes across as though ideas have been run out of and the boundaries are being pushed beyond comprehension just for the controversial value. The art was obviously created with the artist and gallery fully knowing this would cause headlines and publicity, and I feel a bit of distaste at the obvious manipulation. At least with other 'shock artists' such as Damien Hirst, the art for me is thought-provoking and, although can be shocking, has a feel of being carefully thought out. Personally I love much of his work (but not all) as well as other artists that create work that bends the mind. Slapping an erect penis on iconic and revered figures is just a blatant shock-tactic in my opinion. Its the kind of thing foundation Art students might do (and probably have done) before their teacher slaps them down with 'constructive' criticism. Well thats only my thoughts on the subject...some may love it. An artist should know art history. Shock value only lasts so long. (Robert Longo)
September 5, 200817 yr For those interested this is the artists personal websites: http://www.kohbunny.com/ http://kohbirdy.com/ His wiki: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Terence_Koh couple of articles http://themoment.blogs.nytimes.com/2007/12...er-terence-koh/ "Is Terence Koh’s Sperm Worth $100,000?" : http://nymag.com/arts/art/features/26275/ He seems to be an embodiment of the "emo" and net culture. So, I suppose when you think of it, he is representative of part of the west's "zeit-geist" and art should reflect that. But thats a bit of a depressing thought.
