Party Venues

too true

Recommended Posts

g'day chiang mai forumers. i've been entrusted with the job of searching out potential new venues for chun-ki. you know, the late night parties that go on about once a month and are a reprieve from the usual friday night things that we do... i've been to a few places, but people are reluctant to open their doors to it because of the cover charge and the police factor and the like. any ideas or contacts for any potentially good places? it's got to be big, open, willing to stay open until 2 or until the police show up, and it's got to allow a cover charge - that's how money gets to the charities. i've got all the info on paper and can give all the official details. if anyone's got any ideas or leads, post here or PM me.

cheers!

I don't think I know of any specific places but let me just say that I LOVE the Chun-Ki parties!!! Very well organized, good mix of people and loads of fun.

I guess the last one at Sri Lanna National park was a bit too much of a challenge for many people to get to.. But I went, and still enjoyed it a lot; again an awesome idea that I think deserves to be tried again, perhaps slightly closer to Chiang Mai (Ob Khan National park perhaps?) It could turn into Chiang Mai's version of the island's full moon party.

I don't have any sure bet recommendations, but places that may be open to this could be:

The Bear's Den on the river. Maybe a bit too classy looking, not sure if they'd be up for that.

Huan Huay Kaew restaurant... this may be good as it's away from the city near the Khru Bar Srivichai monument, AND it's a cool bamboo structure overlooking Huay Kaew river.. Who knows.

Inside a residential compound......... no problems with police there, but the noise would be a problem for residents for sure.. Yet some housing compounds may have club houses that are a bit away from the regular houses..

Rooftop restaurant of a hotel... Porn Ping tower perhaps?

Anyway, lets keep thinking and trying along these lines... I love the more unusual party locations.

Cheers,

Chanchao

Before I make suggestions, please can you give a bit more info.

eg: What sort of number of people turn up? Noise level? Should food, booze, music etc be supplied by the venue?

I think I can answer that, though keep in mind these are just my thoughts depending on ATTENDING some parties and I do NOT know the organizers personally. So with that in mind:

* LOADS of people may turn up. Easily in the hundreds.

* Noise level is pretty much as loud as they can get away with I think.. That said, most parties I've been to you could still manage a conversation.

* Food & booze were mostly supplied by Chun-Ki I suppose.. Not 100% sure about this one, especially for any food I'm sure they're flexible. Same for the music.. I've seen them build a party in complete nothingness (camping ground in a national park, no electricity, no nothing.. They built the whole thing up, including a ladies and gents toilets, sound, light, displays, buffet counter for the food... awesome. Again I would think this is flexible and on a case by case basis.

Cheers,

Chanchao

Sorry for replying right away guys. My computer at home has crashed so I have to use the one at work. :o

The numbers at chunki usually average between 250 and 300 for a night. It's pretty loud, but it's always at more open air places so that conversation isn't completely drowned out. Food has never really been an issue. If the venue wants to sell it, that's fine. The free tequila shots at the door and the jello shots that get handed around are provided by chunki, but the booze belongs to the bar. Chunki makes an agreement with the owner to get a cut of the profit, though.

Any suggestions p1p?

The munki thing, chanchao, was a bit different. The boys did that all by themselves. THey gave the forest rangers a bit of $$$ and were allowed in to do it. But they got a call from the police the following day. Don't know what came of it, though. Will find out next week. Chanchao if you like the parties so much, why don't you join the committee and give us a hand sorting things out for them. THey're a ###### of a lot of work, I tell you.

Cheers boys.

Looking at a few places, hope this list helps.

The Rimping had a very successful event in the little park behind the Nawarat branch last weekend. This may be a goer as neighbours seem all to be night clubs.

Have a word with Gymkhana Club. They would possibly be interested.

Near Huay Thung Thaew Lake is another possibility.

The Samoeng Loop has any number of resorts, which may be available, look at the SCB resort, they are frequently empty and even Kritsada Doi gardens might be available.

The area around the German Brewery is mostly not built up, plenty of parking and lots of room.

The fitness park, on Huay Kaew just before the zoo.

Don't forget the boxing stadium and 700 year stadium.

Any others I shall post as and when.

You mean the one almost exactly opposite Phu Phing Police Station? :D

I liked the other suggestions, but keep in mind they need to be both away from passing public and constabulary, AND still be reasonably accessible to the attendees. That's a bit of a conflict, hence the challenge.. :o

I think that having a party in a completely non built-up area is only for special occasions because of the huge extra cost and effort involved. Much easier to just rent out a restaurant or resort for an evening. And these would need to be a bit away from full public view, but still fairly accessible, preferably by public transport (or at least Red-Bus'able. )

Speaking of parties, did anyone notice the 'City Beat' (or was it "City Beach"? Don't know because of the Thai pronounciation. :D ) on Charoeng Muang Roead, on the corner of the first soi on the right after crossing Nawarat bridge. There are parties there every week-end. Mostly younger foreigners.

Cheers,

Chanchao

What's classy got to do with it??? The Bear's Den is up for anything and I think you will find we more than fit the bill. Give Dave a call on 01 288 4037 to discuss your requirements in more detail.

looks like the next party will be mid-january. think we've got a place but haven't' c ommitted to anything yet. will definitely call dave from the bear's den today, though, and see what he's got to say.

on a different note, but i suppose loosely connected, a chiang mai based farang dj died on saturday. anyone hear anything about it? a french guy, did some work at forest drunk and then northern lights on friday nights and some at chunki.... i guess it's been an absolute nightmare for everyone involved.
