I have just bought my first DSLR, a Sony A200 in the UK

Never used a DSLR before and I am finding it challenging getting used to all the various modes/settings available but will persevere. These photos were taken from the BBC Restaurant in Bangrak using just the preset sunset setting on the dial.

Both look like really nice photos ... I'm impressed that the standard settings resulted in good exposure for a sun set. Good use of 'rule of thirds' with the horizon. You should edit the size though ..... too big to view on screen unless we do some editing at our end.

Excellent in all respects and most impressive "straight from the camera"

Composition, lighting and tone are first class

Well done

p.s. agree also that you should re-size - try 800x600 @72dpi - will look a lot better on the screen then

Not sure what comes with Vista.

Basically you need something like ACDC, Photoshop Elements etc. This basic software will enable you to enhance your images. In this case you could straighten the horizon a nd reduce the size for the web as above.

Photoshop will do all you need and more - but it will take a little learning at first ... but worth the investment in time.

For now .... If you have Microsoft Office, you should also have Microsoft Picture Manager. Look in the Tools - under 'Edit Photos' there's a compress option. Select screen/presentations and it will reduce it for you. Save it as a separate image using jpeg to avoid downgrading your original! Also has some very basic edit tools.

Photoshop Elements is pretty good and often comes free with a camera or printer?

Have fun .... but try to take the best shot you can in the camera, as tweaking in photoshop is a second best option.

I prefer the second one, better framing.

In the software side products like Faststone are free and offer

viewing and resizing facilities.

Photoshop is very comprehensive, but also very expensive.........

Very nice, Kudos,

When I frame (rule of 3rd's) a sunset I frequently will place the sun both at the top and the bottom,

When composed at the bottom, depending on cloud cover the result can be quite dramatic where the sky will be the main visual element,

Thanx for sharing, :o
