I bought one today on an impulse, feels good in the hand will go shooting some pics tomorrow.

Anyone here have the same Canon EOS 40D model ?

I paid 34,500 Baht in Big Camera for it, I chose the canon over the Nikon as I already have an old Film EOS and guess I can use the lenses from that on the dSLR.

Thanks Vulcan,

Interesting review, the camera seems to be well thought of.

I am taking it out today and will fire off a few hundred shots to test it myself, will post my own feelings about the EOS 40D after a few sessions.

Cheers. :o

I have one and am delighted with it.

A real joy to use. I upgraded from the 10D.

Your old EOS lenses should work fine.

PS unless you plan to shoot RAW, you will probably need to tweak the colour/contrast/etc

settings in the camera menu before you get optimum performance.

This shot was taken during the magic show at a birthday party last week.

I have the Canon EOS Kiss/Rebel XSi 450D. Fantastic camera. I choose this one over the similar Nikon as the advice given suggested it was marginally better. I've always wanted a Nikon (my father had the hardy metal Japanese model from the 50's when I was growing up), but, I can wait...

David Bush has dedicated books for each of the models. Yours is here - Canon EOS 40D Guide to Digital Photography

I'm just now working my way through mine and I'll say it's worth the investment as the manual is sparce and doesn't explain everything fully.

Btw - since I'm swamped with bookmarks and wanted an easier way to access them, I dedicated a page for photography resources on my Thai site, WLT. Feel free to suggest any I don't have...

Hi Maigo6,, for 34500 baht did it come with a kit lens already? I got mine for 35500 with a lens 17mm- 85mm SI,,,I bought it from Panthip plaza,I changed from Nikon. and Im lovin' it!!! :o

By the way you can pair it up with a 50mm F1.8 canon lens, its just 3100 baht,, Very very nice results for portraits!!! :D

I didn't get my DSLR camera as yet. But I know that when it comes to DSLRs, Canon is the best. I would like to buy a Canon but then its a bit too expensive so I am going to start with Nikon (since its cheaper) and then switch later.

It came with an 18 - 55 IS lens in the Kit.

Half price memory card and a free screen cover, that's all I could get in Big Camera, Udon Thani.

I've got one as a backup body for my 1Ds Mk111. The 40D is not a bad camera for what they cost and you should have lots of creative fun with it. Put some decent glass on the front of it if you want to use it to it's full potential.

I was really considering the 40D especially now when it's a real bargain, but I settled for the 450D with 17 - 55 IS 2.8 lens. I used Canon and Nikon in film previously but I prefer Canon in DSLR since all models can use EF lenses in Autofocus.

Only shoot in raw format now, but tried out the jpg's as well, I find the jpg to be pretty decent but in raw and Aperture it is a brilliant combination. The lens is crystal sharp and give great portraits at 55 when you set it at 2.8, very happy with it.

A waterfall near my house, I didn't use a Tripod, was at a very low shutter speed in TV mode, Kit lens with image stabalisation.

Photo was taken as you see it, I did use trimming however.

This 40D is so different to my Fujifilm point and shoot, it will take me ages to work out all the functions, but I will get there in the end.

Now I'm waiting for a sunny day to take some sports shots at 6.5 fps. with my old Sigma telephoto lens off my old EOS film camera.

I just know I'm eventually gonna get addicted to this camera and start buying new lens etc...

Would it really make much of a difference to the Kit lens for general purpose shots ?

I'm no Pro and don't intend to be, it will be a hobby.

Very nice shoot of the waterfall and it proves the function of the IS, The lens question is a good one there is a notifiable difference between the kit lens and say the 17-55 2.8 IS. First of all it is much faster and if you research on the internet it is also sharper than the kit, but it is very pricey so unless you are ready to take the shooting to a different level keep your kit lens. Add up with the 50mm f/1.8 which is great for portraits and only around 3,000,- Baht. If you want wider lens the 10-22 is very good but it's again pricey.

For hobby the kit lens is more than good enough, but to reach the potential of your camera body better lenses will be beneficial.

Thanks Bard and Vulcan for the compliments of the waterfall shot.

By the way, I bought the Canon F 1.8 50mm last week at 3,300 Baht, havn't had the opportunity to test its real potential yet, but I'll do so soon.

Cheers. :o

Good luck with your 50mm f1.8 - great lens.

I use a 50mm f1.4 a great deal, especially for night work where the viewfinder is considerably brighter and the wide aperture enables me to hand hold at decent speeds.

Beware however of the very limited depth of field on these lenses.

Take a look at this - shot at f3.2 from a fairly close range. The right hand side is sharp, but the left, only some 6" further back, is out of focus!

That could be false economy.

The beauty of the SLR, digital or not, is interchangeable lenses.

Once you start investing on that level you will get locked in with one manufacturer.

Better to start with a cheaper model, like the 450D

then upgrade to the 50D or 5D later. :o

beautifulhk.bmp I took this pic not long ago.

Not sure why it is popping up as a download when the pic of the camera is OK. Sorry all.

Sorry to say it but that's an awful shot.

Colours out, no definition, out of focus, not sharp etc.

Looks like something from a Boots "throw-away"

I'm sure you have something to whet our appetites from the MK11

If you upload jpg instead of bmp file and you size it to say 800x600 or 640x480 it will appear nicely in Thai visa.

I am very curious on the EOS 5D Mk II but the price just revokes me from buying it. I rather build up a kit of great lenses which is very expensive, get the reflectors, diffusers, Grey cards, flashes and so on I need before I would go for it. Then maybe, or just go for the EOS 50D I donno to distant in the future yet so hopefully the price tag comes down on the 5D Mk 2 by that time. The deal on the 5D Mk 1 is very attractive right now so I am really considering to buy one of them while they still are in stock.

Well, buy my 40D and spend the rest on good glass then. The pictures are supposed to be just as good as the 50D, the only thing better on the 50D is the viewscreen as far as I recall (maybe a couple other things).

I really want the 5D Mark II, so I'll sell the 40D for a fair price.

Here's a pic I took with the 40D on Saturday:

How much will you charge for the 40D?

I have the new 450D which I must say I am extremely happy with with one exception there is no PC terminal so I had to buy a Nikon AC 15 hotshoe adapter, I might take you on for the 40D and use my 450D as spare if you have a good price for it.

I looked around, and 28,000 seems like a very nice price. PM me if you're interested.

I changed my mind. We're going to keep the 40D and sell a 30D I just got from azcowboy (you can see it advertised in a thread below). It's in great shape with only 2,200 actuations (thanks azcowboy!) and I'm looking to sell it for 17,000 baht.

30D is a bit out of date, probably mint condition but the 450D is superior to it so it would not make sense for me unfortunately. I'll let some buddies know about it they might go for it.
