Hi Guys n Gals :o

My cousin came oer in september from the UK on a non B with WP

to work as a chef in BKK. Due to the economic downturn, he's been

made redundent and his WP cancelled. He's been told by his ex employer

that his 1 year visa will also be void as of mid Feb.

Q is this true?

Also, as he's married to a Thai woman, how easy is it to convert to a Non O

can this be done in Thailand? (He's CM based but will probably go back to BKK

next month anyway)

Cheers

On Q1 it depends. if he is on a multiple non-B, this remains valid. If he however went to immigration to get a one year extension, his permission to stay ends the same day his job ends. He can then get a 7 day extension at immigration for 1,900 baht.

Since he is married to a Thai national he can also apply for an extension of stay for 60 days, instead of 7 days, on showing his marriage certificate. This would give him some more breathing space.

He can change his permission to stay to be based on his marriage to a Thai national, if he can show an income of 40,000 baht a month or 400,000 in a Thai bankaccount for 2 months. This change is no problem and can be as easily done in CM as in BKK.

I think he got his non B in the UK before coming... likely in that case to be a multi and still valid for a year?

Just a bit worrying about what his ex employer said.

Any more difficult to get a WP on a Non O than a Non B?

A multiple stays valid, only an extension of stay woud be invalidated. it si a multiple if he has to leave the country every 90 days.

On a non-O based on marriage you can get a WP just as easily. Many members of Thaivisa have an extension of stay based on their marriage and a WP.

It's still valid until it's valid, he has to check the date in his passport, unless his non-B had run out already and he got an extention based on a work permit. Thus, sounds like they are saying they think he has an extension tied to the work permit, and that they will cancel the work permit in mid-February which cancels his visa extension right along with it on the same day. The key word here is extension. He could have gotten just a 3 month non-B in the UK or a multi. Both are equally likely.

If he qualifies for a non-O, which he does if he's married, then he would probably have to go out of country to get it. And yes, he can get a work permit on that no problem if he gets a qualifying job.
