I have cslox internet at the place i am staying. They let me use one of their phone lines for my modem. The connection is 31.2kbps. Its terrible!

Why is it so slow? I don't think anybody else is using internet, and anyway, 31.2 is the maximum, not what i am actually getting which is a trickle!!

How can i improve it?

Difficult. Some phone lines are just not very high-quality, and frankly when going through an appartment swtichboard I'd count my blessings that you're able to connect reliably at 31.2 at all!

Also note that while some modems claim to connect at 56K or even higher, the actual speed may not be quite that high.
