Losing The "white Knight" Syndrome.

Featured Replies

I just sat back and watched a "respected" member, who I just happen to personally detest, flame a newbie.

Am I mellowing with age?

Or is the beginning of wisdom allowing newbies to find their own way in the world as we had to?

The relevant sub-forum attracts more than the usual number of moderators, I'm sure they'll attend to the matter if they deem it necessary.

Dont know which thread you mean..but sounds pathetic (that a respected member should do this). Sceadugenga, if you feel it deserves a retort, then get some zest back in your Mojo!!

Also, I dont know if I have either had my eyes closed for a while, havent noticed, or its a cycle, but TV atm seems to be pretty hate-filled. I'm seeing thread after thread tainted with bigoted narrow-minded and, in some cases, downright nasty posts. Some not even relating to the opening post. Making me sick. Mods seem to have their work cut out for them of late. (and i realise some members complain or leave due to strict moderation here..but many times im quite glad of it).

Or, maybe ive just been unlucky lately in my choice of thread viewing.

I'm loathe to report someone unless the post is extremely blatant, then I have no qualms. I sometimes add a comment, but if one is not careful in the comment, it can often inflame the situation. When you think about it, it is clear that the great majority of members (and, of course, mods) would appreciate the reporting of these types of posts (leaving aside petty breaches).

Plus if I name and shame now the "respected" member will hunt me down and kill me. :o

It must have been significant for you to tell us about it - it may have been simpler to press the button and let the mods decide (and more likely to have resulted in the right outcome).

edit: oooh, did I say that out loud?

OK, so who is it?

C'mon Scea, get if off your chest.

I'll protect you if your feel that your life is in danger.

Name & shame says I,

Moss

agree, post the thread and the member...

otherwise we are lost on what is happening

..per chance was the flamer an "Advanced Member", been around for a long time, and came out with a single sentence flame?

If im right, then was a bit surprised to read the way he replied to a new member. Harsh.

Publish and be damned,
to quote the Duke of Wellington

For an offensive post, hit the report button. Whenever I find a post offensive and better still if it's in breach of the tv rules, I hit the report button.

Again, as Moss says, good luck...

The guy is notoriously thin skinned, I had to give him a good ass whupping in the CR forum last year but this topic isn't about him, it's about my reaction to his action.

I once took pride in defending the weak and inexperienced but now I can't seem to be bothered.

So, I got it in one.

Having had a good lurk around various sub-forums over the past couple of days, I am beginning to think eek may be right - flaming and trolling seems to be a growth industry. Thank gawd for Bedders...

A false sense of security, perhaps.

Glad you didn't get flamed at home Ping.

Me too! (Although safe at home in Melb.).

Now I am wondering which one you meant, two have a considerable post history? :o

Guilty me Lord on all counts as this newbie had absolutely not clue how to do it.....................

Read on from here

:D

Looking forward to an elaborate pictorial post from you, Scea...

I appreciate the work the 'white knights' do, but a 'report' button (or a quiet PM to a mod) can often clear things up.

The trouble is peoples sensibilities are all different, if it is a clear breach, or spam, or obvious vitriol, then yes, report or pm a mod, but what if it is not so clear cut.

I reported a post here last year, that in my opinion was outrageous, it was not acted upon by mods who let it ride, so they obviously had a different view point than me, but in my mind it was both nefarious and scandalous, so individuals outlook can be seen by others as not 'beyond the Pale'.

So either fix bayonets and up Guards and at 'em, or dissemble the post is my view.

( This is not an open shoot to attack moderation, far from it, just an example how people view differing word association and under the radar attacks )

Agreed Moss. Same with troll posts - some people don't get it.

I could never be a mod.

What many people would call objectionable, I would possibly be cracking up laughing.

Wages ? :D

That'll teach me for not paying close attention to the fine print. I thought it said "Do you want Volumes of Beer" and I ticked "Yes" ! Apparently what it actually said was "Do you want to Volunteer" ! :D

Silly me, I don't even like beer ! :o
