Is it possible to obtain an International Drivers License here in Pattaya? I have a full Thai license, am British and need one as my UK license was stolen recently and I am flying to London soon. If available here, would a Thai International license be acceptable in the UK?

Only in BKK and you need the 5 Thai year variety, they will accept an international license based on your Thai license in the UK ...

Not true. I've got one from the license office on Highway 34 (I think - behind Regent School), bring your Thai DL and passport and some money, I can't remember how much but not too much. They will request it for you in Bangkok, i.e. you will need to get back the week after or so to pick it up.

No real need vvc10. You can drive in the UK with your Thai DL even if you are a Brit. Before you go to the UK, go online and order the D1 package from the DVLC to be delivered to your UK address, then apply for your replacement UKDL once you get there.

While you are waiting for that, go online to the British Automobile Assoc, the AA, and download the form for the UK International DL, may as well get both types. Alternatively, you can go to any main Post Office, fill in both forms there, submit, pay and get your UK International DL's while you wait. Of course they will need to see your UKDL but may accept a photocopy (if you have one) but if not, maybe do that after you get your replacement UKDL back.

Agree it appears he can drive in UK with the Thai DL, probably helps the new ones are in English and agree while he is there he should get replacement for the Brit one, but, if he has a Thai license why would he need a UK International DL?

I am a little worried regarding your post.

Though I have tried to check on line I can not verify, I seem to recall that if you hold (or are disqualified) a UK driving licence then a foreign licence would be invalid for use in the UK. this is to prevent disqualified drivers using foreign licences and drivers facing endorsements or total ban from presenting foreign licences.

Khun Brush..you are 100% correct, however if you came back into the UK and used a foreign license, chances are pretty slight you would get sprung by the HM BiB, but if arrested and the background check is done for some reason think they would figure it out pretty quickly...

I think there will be some other problems:

If you are hiring a car, when you present your Thai driving license with IDP (International Driving Permit), they will ask for your passport and if it is a UK they are likely to refuse you hire.

If you are stopped by the police for any traffic offence they will check your personal details with DVLA (Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency), just with your name and DOB they will be informed if you have points or are a disqualified driver, even for persons with none UK licences, data is held about UK convictions.

If you have been driving in Thailand for any length of time you probably will have picked up some very bad driving habits.

In the UK;

  • it is not OK to drive the wrong way down a one way street if there is no police around.
  • we drive on the left and pass on the right.
  • you may carry only one passenger on a motorbike (if you have a full licence).
  • you do not drive round with the whole extended family on the back of an open pick up truck.
  • you do not turn your head lights off when passing a police car at night with the hope they wont see you.
  • when confronted with a bus overtaking a lorry on a two lane road, peeping you horn will not cause the vehicles to part so you can drive between them.

for driving like a Thai you can expect to be stopped many times, and driving like a Thai you can expect to be asked to blow into a small box with a straw attached, you will not be arrested for traffic offences unless you are drunk or you offer the officer a fiver to forget it.

Wrong....I have a UK passport and legal drivers licenses from three different countries (non are UK licenses) and have hired a car in the UK many times, but I am "legally" non-resident in the UK

If however someone was still legally resident in the UK, had a UK drivers license (valid or suspended) and tried to use a foreign license for "some purpose"....I could understand the BiB getting p*ssed over that one..

I concur about the underlined paragraph. I have flown into Manchester and hired a car at the airport using my Thai obtained International Driving Permit supported with a UK passport. That was in September 2008. I do not have permanent residence, merely 4 years of visa extensions.

It is correct that if you are disqualified from driving in the UK..........it applies to all licences from ALL countries.

And it's also confirmed on the DVLA website or a link to a .gov.uk website from it. There's a 'wizard' type web page that you type in your nationality, then your license type and it gives you the answer. I am British with a Thai license and it said I can drive in the UK for 1-year on my Thai DL.

Similarly, I have used my UK license to rent a car in the US and used my US-issued credit card and vice versa in the UK and they never batted an eyelid. I have never been asked for a passport at a car rental agency apart from in Thailand, all the others just wanted my DL and plastic.
