Special Thai Project - Tefl / Tesol

Featured Replies

My boyfriend and I want to take a TEFL course while we are in Thailand but money is tight (we have been living on one diving instructors income for the past 6 months in Thailand). I have performed a number of web searches and there appear to be hundreds of websites offering TEFL courses in Thailand with no way of telling which ones are legit and will be internationally recognised. The Thai Special Project (you can google it and many different websites will come up) seems ideal for us as we would only have to come up with $500-750 to take the course and then we would be paid for the 4 months that followed. Does anyone know if this course (or any website offering this course) is legit and if the certificate will enable us to find work in Japan for example?

I have to be back in the UK to do a Masters degree in September so we can't commit to any teaching work for longer than 4 months following the course, otherwise we would probably take one of the reccommended Chiang Mai courses and then look for work. I imagine most schools require a minimum time commitment of 6 months?

The grand plan is to take the TEFL while we are in Thailand, return to the UK for my Masters and one year later travel to Japan to work as teachers so it is imperative that whichever course we take will enable us to find teaching work internationally.

Please help.

Many thanks.

If you are limited to 6 months, you may find a job replacing a teacher who has broken their contract - not uncommon. Or it's possible that a school may offer a contract for just 1 semester (May-Sept or Oct-Mar).

You may find work teaching part-time in a language school. There are over 20 in Chiang Mai if you choose to stay there.

Japan requires degrees. A TEFL may be a bonus but is not essential to find work.
