So the wife bought a Honda Chaley (spelling?) for her 'lil brother.  Age indeterminate, condition pretty fair for Thailand.  After going over it with a pair of spanners, basically making sure no bits and pieces were going to fall off, I took into the engine.  Now granted I don't have much experience with two strokes, but if you're constantly fouling plugs either your gap is too tight or somethings not quite kosher with your carb settings right?  Well of course the other brother's solution was to just pull the plug and have a go with a spot of sandpaper.  I on the other hand opened up the gap and played with the carb a bit.  And what you know; it's starting on the third, at most, attempt.

Here's where the problem lies though.  I managed to get a pretty sweet idle going on, and attempts to adjust, what I assume is the secondary needles (does it have them?), seems to be futile.  Up to ~1/3 throttle it goes well, but on past that there's a lot of sputtering and not much else.  Also, when it eventually gets up to full tilt on RPMS, backing off gives a really really nice after-fire.  Now I was thinking that a couple of things could be the problem.  A)  Bad fuel.  Been trying to run through the petrol that's in there and get some fresh stuff, but that dinky little motor uses almost no fuel.  :o  Dirty carb.  I don't know how long that the bike had been sitting, but wouldn't it be possible for the main jets to have gotten gunked up?  C)  An intake leak.  Like I said, I don't have much experience with two-strokes, so this could be a reach, but with modern cars a intake leak can lead to all sorts of issues, so I'm wondering if that could be it.

Any constructive advice, or smug "gawd you're stupid" is welcome as long as I can get this up and running smoothly.

**edit**

Don't have a lot of tools at my disposal, just the basic odds and ends and am mainly trying to teach the little bugger something about mechanics. So if it's too advanced for what I go he's going to have to take it to the shop.

Davo,

My first port of call would be striping the carby down & giving it a good clean, having had plenty of motox 2 strokes over the years, ive always found the to operate best with a squeaky clean carby....but you might be up for a new jetting.

I don't think its going to be then end of your problems though. What year model is that?

I think the bad fuel route could be the problem as two stroke would be a bad fuel to put in a FOUR STROKE Honda Chaly! :o .

OK, I'm a twit.  :D  It's fully 4 stroke, I just had a brain fart due to the shape of the exhaust and the way it sounds.

I can't tell the age, but on the bottom half of the cylinder it has "72 cc" and the frame is stamped on the steering tube with "CF50-1002151".

dave, i didnt bother searching the honda, never heard of one, just assumed you had the 2stroke thing nutted out.

Sorry the pics aren't better, I had to use my N73 and Surefire to get the pics.  The first is of the exhaust (don't know why the dipstick didn't clue me in!) and the second, of really really bad quality is the 72cc stamping on the engine (seems like the engine that Honda stuffed into the 72cc Cub and DAX), indicating that this isn't the original engine.  Hard to get a picture under those conditions.  And if you like the bike, check out the sticker the little shit put on it!

Currently, with the way it's running, I'd estimate maybe a speed of 45ish.  Of course this is on a bike that probably weighs less than I, has disc brakes front and rear, and running on a gravel road-so my estimate may be generous.

The more I think about it, the more I'm inclined to go with a gunked up carb.  Especially in light of the afterfire....

Okay Dave you had me... I was thinking it was a "Female Toilet"... But surely nice moped to run in a moobaan...

The other side has "Male Toilet" sticker also!

But I'm guessing it has to be great for the area we live; it's a Honda of course.....

I'm just going to give him some money and tell him to take it down to the local Honda shop to sort out the carb, don't have the time to do it myself.
