Villagers end road blockade in Saraburi

SARABURI: -- Villagers ended the three-day blockade of Phaholyothin Road in Nong Kae district here early Sunday morning after the environment minister ordered the temporary closure of a garbage disposal site.

The villagers blocked both in-bound and out-bound Phaholoythi between the Kilometre markers 98 and 99 since Thursday to demand the closure of the garbage disposal site of Better World Green Co Ltd in Tambon Nong Plalai of Muang district.

The villagers blamed pollution from the disposal site for illness among many of them.

At 10:40 pm Saturday, Natural Resources and Environment Minister Suwit Khunkitti came to the rally site to meet the villagers.

Suwit then instructed Saraburi Governor Thanasek Asawanuwat to temporary shut down the disposal site pending an investigation whether the site caused pollutions that affected the villagers' health.

The villagers started dispersing at 6:30 am Sunday and the traffic returned to normal at 7 am.
