Nine supporters of the United Front for Democracy against Dictatorship (UDD) in Chiang Rai turned themselves in to police on Tuesday to face accusations of involvement in protest violence.

Among them was Wisarn Techatheerawat, former executive of the disbanded Thai Rak Thai party. He was accompanied by his daughter Wisaradee, a Chiang Rai MP of the Puea Thai party.

About 30 red-shirt supporters showed up at the police station.

Ms Wisaradee used her position as an MP post to bail for her father.

Police questioned the nine accused. No decision was made on allowing them bail.

It appears that these people are demanding their day in court.

Their cause is popular in the North and any trial that eventuates could well turn into a media circus.
