Sewage backhoe causes Bangkok utility chaos

BANGKOK: -- A backhoe being used to construct a sewage system yesterday tugged at high power wires, causing 17 poles to collapse along a two-kilometre stretch of Phraya Suren Road in Bangkok's Khlong Sam Wa district.

The 11am incident involving a Samco backhoe cut electricity in the area, while a motorcyclist who swerved to avoid the falling poles fell with his machine and smashed his ankle. The poles also damaged a parked pickup truck.

In related news, Hua Mark traffic police reported that another backhoe accident had been resolved.

The Sino-Thai backhoe hit a pedestrian bridge at Soi Ramkhamhaeng 79 on Friday evening and fortunately prevented it from crashing down.

The accident caused traffic chaos on Ramkhamhaeng Road as vehicles were directed to the elevated road.

City officials yesterday managed to cut the bridge in two and remove the backhoe.
