I'm looking for a little advice. I've been offered a better job and will be leaving my present teaching position in the middle of June. My old school will cancel my documents (visa & work permit) on my last day of work. I've been told that I must leave Thailand on the same day that my documents are canceled. Is this true?

I will need a new visa, the new school has advised me to go to Lao for the new B visa. They will give me a letter stating that they are employing me. I live in Chiang Mai. Can any of the old hands on the forum tell me if you agree that this is the best place to go and how you would handle this situation including the police clearance I will need to obtain from BK? My new employment doesn't start until August 3rd.

Thanks for your help!

Your extension of stay ends the day your job ends. You can get a 7 day extension at immigration (1900 baht).

If you ddin't have so much time between jobs it is possible to the transition from one to the other.

You don't need a police clearence to get a non B now.

Unless your new employer can give you the paperwork for the visa before your job ends it might be best to go out and get a tourist visa when your job ends.

Even if you get a non-b now you might not have enought time to get the work permit before it runs out,

From Chiang Mai you can go to Vientiane for the Visa or even KL and Penang. It just depends on how much you want to spend for the trip.

Thank you.

I met with the new school today. For some reason they told me I must have the police clearance and that I can't get the visa process started without it. Something about starting fresh. I don't know. My old school took care of everything. I never had to to worry about any documentation or anything. Now I kind of wish I had.

If I go out and get a tourist visa will I be able to have it changed to a B?

You will most likely have to go out again to get the B visa. It is possible to do a change of visa status but immigration seldom do it for an axtension based upon employment.

With the tourist visa your school can start the work permit process.

I think you new school is a little behind the times. The police check was dropped some time ago unless it is their policy that you need one to get the job.

I've been told that I will have the letter form my new school showing intention to employ before my last day of work. Does this mean I can go out and come back with a B visa without the police clearance document which takes 10 days? If so I will stop in BK apply for the police clearance and continue on to Lao. Please advise.

You won't need the police clearence to apply for the visa.

And unless the school requres it you may not need it at all.
