Total Bangkok Novice Looking For Romantic Restaurant Preferably In Sukhumvit

I live in Mae Hong Son, boyfriend coming in from Canada, we're meeting in BKK. I know nothing about Bangkok, we are staying at Hotel Uno Sukhumvit Soi 19 - are there any outstandingly romantic restaurants anyone can recommend? Or alternatively, just really neat, special restaurants (and I don't mean neat as in Cabbages & Condoms, been there done that and not romantic enough). Not necessarily within walking distance or anything, though that would be a big bonus. But we can handle a Skytrain or long cab ride for the right place.

RR&B (Rib Room) at the top of the Landmark Hotel is nice and classy, make reservations for a window seat, be advised, it a'int cheap

Hey I appreciate the replies, could you also mention why you are recommending a particular place? I have read a lot of recs for Banyan Tree, is it really that nice? I kind of get the impression it's a little cheesy and pretentious. It looks like the views are really nice, does the atmosphere match?

It's a splurge night so expensive is doable.

Rib Room looks kind of stuffy - I just checked out the website which doesn't have a lot of info from but from the photo it reminded me of the top floor at the Hancock Tower - place for a drink but probably not dinner. Please correct me if I'm wrong! Also it all looked indoors - do they have tables outside?

It really depends on your tastes... some of the hotel restaurants are a little touristy for my tastes, particularly the ones with a good view....

Once in a while I like to take my girlfriend to L'Opera, an Italian restaurant on Sukhumvit 39 (deep into the Soi on the left hand side).

In my opinion is has one of the most romantic settings, a good wine list, dim lighting and great food.

In my opnion Vertigo is one of the nicest/romantic resaturants in bkk............. but thats my opinion..... the atmosphere is good .......food is good.

Alternatively, there are the boats on the river where you can have a good meal. and have a ride up and down the river.... which is also very nice. .

Most of the river cruises are pretty tacky. The only one I'd seriously consider is the Oriental's Maeyanang boat, but I've got a feeling it stops in the rainy season. You might want to give them a call. If it isn't running, they might be able to suggest something comparable.

If you want to stay around Sukhumvit take a look at the two restaurants at the top of Siam at Siam Hotel. The hotel is not as tall as The Banyan Tree or State Tower with Sirocco but this place is equally as impressive. Both the inside French restaurant on the top floor and the stone grill Roof Restaurant are very romantic. If the weather is nice sitting outside on the roof may be your best bet but one floor below inside is very nice as well. There is also a very cool bar on the roof that would be perfect for some Champagne before or after dinner.

As said, RR&B is not realy stuffy, it's quite modern and sleek. A great bet if steak's your thing.

My bet for romance, however, has to be Philippe Restaurant on Sukhumvit 39. Easily walkable from Phrom Phong station. Excellent French food and classic decor. This would bea top restaurant in any city in the world.

I'd expect to be B1,500 a head without wine.

Another suggestion would be Harvey's on Thong Lor (Sukhumvit 55) Soi 9. A short cab ride from Thong Lo station.

Um, why are we presuming that I'm a guy?! Like I said, budget is flexible, because it's a splurge night. In general we're not into really stuffy, formal places (which tend to be the places that charge a fortune) - that's not our idea of romantic. There seems to be a bias toward really expensive places - that's fine, as long as we're not confusing expensive or pretentious with romantic!

For us, really nice view, good music (no elevator music please), intimate setting, and good lighting is what we're after in terms of the 'romantic' part. Good service and good food is what we're after always, of course. I'm not interested in paying a fortune for a meal unless it meets all those critera and the food and service are truly memorable. I hope that makes sense. I also agree that the dinner cruises tend to be really tacky, if that helps.

I'm tempted by Vertigo and Sirocco (although after waza's comment I wonder...) because of the rooftop setting.

try zense atop zen central world, cheaper than the other rooftops but nice. reserve for outdoor seating. very diverse menu.

I would reccomend the roof top restuarant in the Grand china princess rotating different views good food good ambient music views over the city & if it rains you can watch the lighting storm how romantic do you want it my wife loves it & she always asks to return every visit

With good weather : Ploenchit road, Langsuan, Soi 5.

The Soi is small, just walk through it, its next to the Sawasdee Langsuan Inn hotel.

Should be around 200B for 2 persons + live band

A teppanyaki restaurant such as Tsunami at the JW Marriot could also be fun. I wouldn't go as far and say it's romantic but the food is fantastic, and its very memorable and enjoyable.

Agree on L'opera in Soi 39.

Also if weather is good i would recommend river cruise but not on those tourist liners. One of the best is from D-River (cross the river via old Krungthep bridge and you can see it left side). It is nice old rice barge thus not that big. Only thing is that they require min 10 or so people to book or they won't sail but i have done it few times and there has been always one or two couples willing to join. The food (mainly seafood and thai) is ordered before you depart and is same price as in the restaurant. You only pay some extra per head for the boat ride but that's not much. You propably can book the boat just for you two and still beat the cost of sirocco etc etc. You also can take your own wine and they will serve it to you.

One good option around Krungthep bridge is Goodview? The place on left just before Krungthep bridge. Same soi as some tall condo towers. Indoor / Outdoor thai place and the dining area outside with river view is nice. Popular with Thais. Book beforehand or go early and tell you are on honeymoon to get a good view and some privacy. These might just be more romantic and exotic for you bfrind than another facy rooftop restaurant in 5 star hotel providing he's new to asia or thailand.

Maybe. I love Harvey's and Philippe, but each to their own.

Face is a lovely venue, though I'd go for the Indian (Hazara) or the excellent new Japanese (Misaki) rather than the Thai restaurant. The food at Lan Na Thai is sweetened and generally toned down, and suffers as a result.

Other options are Opus Italian wine bar, which is new and getting quite a buzz. Despite the wine bar name, they do excellent food.

There's also Enoteca, which is a fantastic Italian.

And also Eat Me off Soi Convent which is where I'm taking Mrs Polecat tonight after the cinema.

Yeah, The Goodview is great. It's at the end of Charoen Krung, almost opposite the hospital. The condo you're talking about is, I think, Supalai Casa Rivera, so either are a good reference point for any taxi drivers.

i suggest you get away from all the tourist restaurants like vertigo..... try Giusto on soi 23, its probably the best Italian and mos classy restaurant in Bangkok.. wine expensive great atmosphere !

Face : Soi 38m Old Thai House, day time there is a spam evening cozy bar section, Indian restaurant section, Thai Section restaurant and now japanese... i usually go there for a couple of drinks at the bar, the restaurants atmosphere is nice, not many people, but quite expensive.... 1500 per person no wine

Mahanaga: Soi 29 Thai Restaurant nice surrounding, same price as The Face

Long Table: Soi 18/16/14 not really sure , hip restaurant and bar small menu (Thai fusion and western, nice venison) but all good very nice bar in large veranda, view of the city at night....

That's a bit of a stretch IMO. Most of the entrees are in the 300 - 500 baht range. I've gotten out of there for less than 1,500 for 2 people with drinks.
