Investment in northern region up 200%

CHIANG MAI: -- Investment in Thailand's northern region rose by nearly 200 percent last year, mainly as a result of heavy investment in agro-industry, according to figures released by the Board of Investment of Thailand (BOI)'s northern office today.

Mrs. Siriporn Nurak, director of the office, said that last year BOI investment concessions in the region totalled over Bt14.9 billion, up 191.24 percent from the previous year’s figures.

She also noted a 50 percent rise in the number of Thai-owned companies offered investment concessions, with the majority of Thai investment in agricultural and light industry.

Foreign investors, particularly from Japan, meanwhile, showed an interest in the production of electronic components, while US investors also looked towards light industry.

The most popular province for investment was Lamphun, followed by Chiang Mai, Lampang and Nakhon Sawan.
