I realize that many teachers tutor on the side......most do I'm sure.

But, is it legal to get paid to do private tutoring according to Thai law? I thought a work visa only allowed you to work for that one company.

Also, can you work for a second company part time, legally (second unrelated question)? By this I mean working on weekends for another company and what needs to be done to make that legal?

Thanks for your help!

Some years back I had a lady friend who taught for a reputable agency (apparently there are some despite what we read here). She had a work permit and took a part time job for a company answering correspondence and e-mails. Her boss at the company got her WP amended to include his place of employment.

By the way, this wasn't done out of concern for her; it was done out of self-interest. He was involved in a legal battle with his former partner and was pretty sure he might report anything he could to the authorities.

You can have as many jobs as you want, but you will need a separate work permit for each. And most contracts of labour read, you were committed to "give your best to your employer". Sure, as in most countries, your employer provides paid holidays and social insurance for keeping you fit for your job at his company, but not for making some extra money... :)

My experience was that the original employer on your work permit must provide a letter of consent for additional employmers to be added to the work permit. It's just one work permit book covering all employeers. At one point I had three employers listed. No problems beyond the regular paperwork and the letter of consent
