Been waiting to see if you get any replies, saw a documentory about 18 months ago on Thai TV, all in Thai so only got some translation from my wife. These guys did the trip you are talking about, I am not sure where they left Thailand. Perhaps someone else saw it and recorded the program.

There is a TV member in C.M. who has a very informative website with all the information you need about this trip; step by step. I can't think of what his website is called. Perhaps he will see this post and chime in, or someone else will know who I mean and post the information. I think he used to be a policeman in America.

I wonder who the 'Thai Lai' referred to in the Early blog are?

Yup, I admit I got that one wrong. After some 900 plus reads on that page you are the first to find it. I honestly don't remember where that info came from. Please proof the rest of the website, I am sure there may be more :) .

My "translator" reminded me that was supposed to be "Tai Yai". See link.

interesting... any change to cross the border from Mong La to China or is the border still closed?

btw just came back from Mesai and it was interesting to see cars, motorbikes, vans etc going both ways with Thai, Chinese and I guess Burma plates in them as well... and it seemed so easy... i guess its get more complicated when there is white skin in the car or the car will continue further from Tachilek.

Anyway I would be very interested if anyone have info whether I could drive from Tachilek to Mong La and cross border to China and continue from there on. I'm mainly interested on the Burma side of restrictions the Chinese and side Im more familiar with.

I have not heard of anyone who has been able to do this. I have heard that since my trip, Mong La has opened some of the casinos and that it is more active.

As you can see in my report, the fact that all your papers are turned in at Tachilek (including passport) would rule out any further travel.

You say you are familiar with the Chinese side. I would be interested in information on that, as China has always been extremely restrictive of anyone driving their own vehicle. Yes, with money and guides it can be done but not through Burma that I am aware.

I am also curious about this... Is it possible to get info from the Myanmar Embassy/Consulate? Or is it more the concern about getting it out of Thailand?
