I would like advice on a camera I am considering buying from a friend.

The camera is a Canon 300d which I think is 6 mega pixel camera. I already have a Canon film SLR so hopefully can use the lenses from that. My friend is asking 100 gbp (5500 baht) for the camera and will probably include a lens or two plus accessories. Only this week I bought a Canon Powershot 10 mega pixel point and shoot for 3990 baht. So my question is will I benefit from the SLR? A few years ago this 300d was just what I was after but now with the increase in technology and the higher pixel cameras I wonder if the point and shoot will be just as good.

The dslr is a complete different league than point and shoot. Don't get hung up in the megapixel debacle 6 megapixels is more than enough for a crystal clear A4 sized printout, even seen 6 mp printed with the help of genuine fractals to A2 sized images.

You can use your old lenses with the 300D.

-The creativity you get with lenses are great

-The shutterlag on Point and shoot is pretty frustrating, you click say something moving and it might be off the frame before the image is recorded, you have none of that with a DSLR

-Flash, let's put it this way DON'T unless fill in on a point and shoot

Bonus with point and shoot is obviously they're easy to carry, I own both one around me all the time and the DSLR for whenever I go to take pictures, or know I will do so.

6 Mpx is fine as starting point, and the Canon is a neat and light camera.

The sensor on the 300D is much larger than the point and shoot, so noise will be less

and results possibly better

Older Canon SLR lenses should be fine, just check that the auto focus works with them.

This can be an issue sometimes.

Also remember the lenses will behave like a unit of X1.6 for the focal length.

Good luck.

Thanks for that advice. I thought as much, but wasn't sure. I remember thinking 6 mega pixels was was more than enough a few years ago, but things move so fast. I've already agreed to buy it anyway. I am looking forward to getting the 300d.

Good Camera for a starter. Once you got into the details and the learning curve flattens out, you might realize that there are several Software flaws, or rather Software limitations due to Marketing Strategy. I forgot the full details, but it has to do with Focusing as well as Metering Modes, which are only available in the otherwise functionally limited Scene Modes, but not in PAS.

Years ago when this Camera was on the market, someone hacked the firmware and this can be downloaded here

I used this firmware a lot, the limitations are noted on the Page and I can only recommend it, once you see what the limitations I mentioned mean. There is no problem to reinstall the Original Firmware in case you run into problems, as long as you follow the routines described on the page.

Have fun with the 300D, my First Digital SLR.
