Unscrupulous boxing promoters, violent bookmakers, a Russian gangster, incompetent amateur robbers,

and supposedly Jewish jewelers fight to track down a priceless stolen diamond.

Last Life in the Universe, a Thai/Japan collaboration. A beautiful strange movie.

'The Road Home' by Zhang Yimou.

Is that the one with Zhang Zi Yi?

For some reason I really liked Drugstore Cowboy.

For romance I can't get past Far and Away with Nicole and Tom.

I like to be, Far and Away, from Nic and Tom too.

Truly, I can't say how many times I've watched it and it never loses it's luster.

Someone mentioned The Gods Must Be Crazy....and TGMBC 2.

Also The Big Blue, about free diving.

There was a book called Shibumi....if it was ever made into a movie I would want to see it.

Another vote for Snatch that was great.

Glengary Glenross http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0104348/

Al Pacino, Alec Baldwin, & Kevin Spacey star in a movie about very dodgy real estate brokers. Being a broker myself, I try to use this as an example of what NOT to be like but its still good for some memorable quotes, especially from Baldwin (playing Blake)

Blake: We're adding a little something to this month's sales contest. As you all know, first prize is a Cadillac Eldorado. Anybody want to see second prize?

[Holds up prize]

Blake: Second prize is a set of steak knives. Third prize is you're fired.

Blake: Put. That coffee. Down.

[pause]

Blake: Coffee's for closers only.

And Al Pacino to his sales manager

Ricky Roma: WHAT YOU'RE HIRED FOR, is to help us... does that seem clear to you? TO HELP US, not to... fuc_k-US-UP... to help those who are going out there to try to earn a living... You fairy. You company man.

Also Big Wednesday will always hold a special place for me too http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0077235/

So if these films are as good as they're said to be (given that there seems to be agreement in respect of some of them), then it would seem logical that they would do okay in mainstream release, no? I'm aware that studios run test screenings and that these play a part in the decision as to marketing of a movie, but surely there must be some other reason as to why apparently excellent films would not make it to the big screen. Any thoughts on this?

(Yes, an old thread, but I dare say people have views on this aspect that was not broached.)

You forgot the Gyppos (diddy coys, travellers, gypsies, pikeys)

where'd yew guys see all these films?...certainly not in Thailand...

except for my own video collection and the occasional flick on TCM or Fox movies when in the ME I haven't seen a good film for over 10 years... :)

but, I read about them in The Observer's Review section...thank god for Phillip French...

Brother by "Beat" Takeshi Kitano.

Its like a samurai film dressed up as a gangster movie. The Yakuza in LA.

Look for the uncensored version.

Again the wife thought the violence was overdone which means its good!!!!

"From Dusk To Dawn" popped up on Fox last night.

My TGF couldn't believe how the second half of the film evolved.

Incredible cast: George Clooney, Harvey Keitel, Quentin Tarantino, Selma Hayek, Juliette Lewis, Cheech Marin.

The p..$y word gets used an incredible 33 times in this scene with Cheech Marin

Its as raw as pulp fiction......great vampire flick......

"Not Quite Jerusalem", centred around life on a kibbutz. Excellent film.

Yup - small boys are OK, but anything that involves fun, men with women, such ... and you're off to head-chop square at Friday noon-time.

Not a movie - but it could be a hit in Sandland

Anyway, it's something to dream about in your 4m x 4m single-room, 500km from the nearest beer.

anybody ever see Five Easy Pieces? by Bob Rafaelson with Jack Nicholson and released in 1970 but it didn't make big waves at the time as it didn't appeal to the popular audience...

just finished watchin' it...it was an early addition to my collection 'cause I had seen it on TV and was impressed...excellent film, always see sumpin' different with each viewing...

an' what about Mon Oncle Antoine? heralded as one of the best canadian films but generally disregarded...it occupies a special place on my video shelf...

I could go on an' on about third world cinema (Memories of Underdevelopment, Emitai, Blood of the Condor, Jackal of Nahueltoro, etc) but those magnificent films were never intended for a popular audience...a mass audience, perhaps...

(where's Marshall McLuhan? he's lurking on the forum somewhere...)

I know where you're coming from but you have to remember that the mass market is not concerned with artsy craftsy pictures.....they have to cater to the common denominator....fast paced action/sex/humour.

Mind you, Snatch was quite popular all around and screened on prime time tv.

I don't know if phobia is quite right as I don't have an irrational fear per se, but they are a real freak out! :)

^Haven't seen Kayo around for a while...
