Foreign tourist missing in rough seas off Phuket

PHUKET: -- A foreign tourist went missing while swimming in the sea off Karon Beach in the southern resort province of Phuket during heavy rain and strong winds.

Local residents on Sunday morning reported to the authorities that an apparent foreign tourist drowned near Karon Beach. Rescue workers were searching for the missing man but have found no trace.

The search was conducted with difficulty due to high waves and strong winds.

Phuket has experienced heavy and strong winds for the past five days as the meteorological department forecast torrential rain and isolated heavy rainfall in the South, particularly in Ranong, Phangnga, Phuket, Trang and Satun provionces, as a low pressure cell and a moderated southwest monsoon prevails over the Andaman Sea.

Reported to be a Russian, named Alexander Lukin, aged in his 20s or 30s.

a guest at the Thavorn Beach Resort, disappeared in the sea about 11.30am. The resort confirmed that the man, staying alone, arrived yesterday.

Sad news - but swimming in this region in this weather without local knowledge is totally stupid IMHO.
