Air crash simulation underway at Phuket Airport

MAI KHAO, PHUKET: -- A full-scale air crash simulation is underway at Phuket International Airport this morning under the banner of the Emergency Plan Exercise 2009.

From 9.00am to 12pm officials from the Disaster Prevention and Mitigation Department, Phuket Provincial Police, Tourist Police, Marine Police, airline staff and other local government and private sector agencies will combine efforts to evaluate their readiness for an airplane crash.

Phuket Governor Wichai Phraisa-ngop is also expected to attend the drill.

The drill is being held one day before the two-year anniversary of the 2007 One-Two-Go crash which claimed 90 lives.

Airport General Manager Wing Commander Prathueng Sornkham said a Boeing 737-400 airplane owned by Thai Airways would be used in the crash simulation.

“The crash simulation will take place at bay 14, away from the runway, and will not cause any delay to daily operating flights,” said Mr Prathueng.

Marking the tragic accident of the air crash on September 16, two years ago, the Phuket International Airport on September 15th conducted a comprehensive exercise in handling air accidents at the airport. The exercise, as a lesson, supposed a plane carrying 120 passengers requesting an emergency landing due to a fire in an engine. After being notified the airport fire brigade & a rescue team rushed to the scene and took control of the situation and rescued passengers who were supposedly trapped in the plane. The incident was supposed to result in no fatal cases, only unconscious passengers due to flames. Staff used the drill to improve their rescue and first aids skills and operation. The airport Director Pratueng Sornkham expressed his satisfaction after the drill as the assessment reported that rescue teams got to the scene swiftly and that the airport is very well equipped with fire extinguishers. He hopes the drill not only enhanced skills and preparedness of all units concerned, but also built confidence in passengers.
