Sorry

555! O, you didn't change.

I passed your house (or should a call it a village in the mean time?) last week on my way to Nan.

I still think that Nan is an excellent place to make a trip to when living in Chiang Rai. It's a beautiful ride through an

extremely beautiful landscape, especially this time of the year. Go over Chun and Pong and come back over Payao for instance.

It's temples are more beautiful than any in Chiang Rai, it has a real museum, where Chiang Rai town has none worth mentioning

(feel free to disagree), at least one fine hotel and you can have an excellent diner at one of the river restaurants.

I actually bumped at the Dhevarat Hotel into a person who is an acquaintance of you too, namely the present chairman of the Chamber

of Commerce of Chiang Rai. There happened to be a big conference with all the captains of industry, representatives of the

local authorities and representatives of the national Thai government.

Yes, Nan gives the impression to be little, but it isn't.

The murals of Wat Prumin are very interesting. The temple was built at the end of the seventeenth century but restored in 1869.

It was then when the murals were added about the history and the life in the province, that at that time still was a kingdom.

Yes, the French were there. They cut the kingdom effectively in pieces: Nan, once extending into Sibsongpannaa, was reduced

to the part below the Mekong after the Paknam incident in 1893.

Here we seem them depicted. They came over sea with the big ships and embarked on steamers (paddle-boats) for travelling the

Mekong upstream.

Hi Ohpont,

Thanks for your input. I was kinda hoping I wouldn't have to stay in the one behind teh gas station in town (Ladawan?) which looks like a bit of a dive.

My Map shows a village called Baan Muang when travelling south on the #1091 highway. Is it after that and on the same road?

I'll give them a call I guess but just checking the local knowledge too.

Thanks again

Hi AJarnP

Yes, that's it, on 1091 after Baan Muan you have got Pha Daeng before Baan Huay Singh.

Resort and restaurant are on the right side, on the way south, kind of hill side, view on the Mae Nam Yom

I am in Kong Lae on Mae Nam Mao Soi 5, and home these days, drop by for a drink if you have time!

Hi Oh,

Let me treat you to a beer at the resort. I called them and they have given us quite a good deal for a two-bed unit. We'll be cycling there from my home in Wiang Chai and I am guessing we'll arrive by mid-afternoon on 8th November.

Cheers,

Hi Ajarn,

Since I stopped participating in mountainbike challenges (I did among others the first five versions of the

annual Chiangrai International MB Challenge) I changed to a Merida hybrid with bigger wheels and lighter tyres.

I am the guy in the eternal Banesto shirt (my Thai friends joke always asking me how many of them I have - this

subtile humor with a hidden message 555!).

I am not sure if I come to look, but when, then I will find you.

Sunday the 18th we have at 18.00 the match Chiangrai United against Narathiwat (and not Saturday 17 as I wrote

in the football thread).

So it's gonna be a sporty day anyhow.

That climb would kill me Ajarn, you can't stop your legs because then you come to an immediate standstill.

Not a second of rest and this for longer (much longer in my case) than an hour.

This race is only for hero's! Wish you the best!

Limbo,

we take good note of your promise

There will be Naughty one al fresco too and by the way just received a sample of the Vodka made in Lanna and soon to be on the

market, quite nice product mellow and delicate...

Been in Nan last week end for the grand finale of the boat race, glorious like always.

Hope you had a good time after ball.

On! On! Orangeade Club! 555

See you soon and take good care.
