hi all ... one question ... we are planning to go to ayuthaya this saturday ... a day trip ... ... we found out that there is a bus at mochit bus station ... or a minibus at victory monument ... where will the bus or the minibus stop in ayuthaya and how to get to the famous places of the city? are there motorbikes for rent? or something like hop on hop off buses around the city?

No hop on or hop off. If your only going to be there for the day hire a tuk tuk to show you the sites, 500baht.

you can rent a motorbike for 150 baht and drive yourself around

i really have no idea about ayuthaya ... is it a big city? are the sights closed to each other?

what do you think ... how long do we need to see the main attractions?

You really need 2 to 3 days to see the sights and do the city justice. I recommend you get a guest house around the train station or just across the river.

Minivan is much faster and more convenient. (It's a pain to get to the Morchit bus station.)

Both buses and minivans end their journeys in the centre of town. Stay on either until the end of the route.

Incidentally, minivans leave from Victory Monument at two locations. You definitely want the minivan stop outside Fashion Mall. (The Ayutthaya vans are at the head of the queue.) From the other location they go to the Rojana industrial estate, which is nowhere near the monuments.

Technically, there is a hop on/hop off service. It starts at the Historical Study Centre. However, the buses are infrequent, and you'll have long waits between sites. They also only cover the central area. Best bet is to hire a tuktuk. The official rate is 200 Baht/hour, but you'll need to negotiate. The tuktuk drivers know where the sites are so you won't get lost. Alternatively, hire a bicycle (the weather's pretty cool now) or a motorcycle. Both are available from many places around town.

There are loads of sites on the central island, which is quite compact. You could easily spend a day just seeing the main sites there. However, realistically speaking, you'll probably get very bored after 3-4 temples.

Some of the more interesting temples are off the island, such as Wat Naphrameru, Wat Yai Chai Mongkol, Wat Phanang Choen and Wat Chai Wattanaram (not sure about the exact spellings of these). (The first three of these are still active and very popular with worshipers.) All can easily be reached by bicycle.

To make your day more interesting take a boat trip around the island. At Wat Phanang Choen just wander down the the riverside - a boat owner will find you. You can also get a boat from just south of Hua Ro market. Count on about 500 Baht for an hour trip. Again, negotiation is required.

Consider having a buffet lunch in one of the big hotels. It'll be aircon'd, which will be a good break. Cost usually just under 200 Baht. Krung Sri River and Ayothaya Riverside (not the Ayothaya Hotel) both have extensive buffets.

Enjoy your trip!

AyG gave good advice. I always suggest any new visitor to Thailand to take at least ONE trip to Ayutthaya. It's like a mini Ankor Wat.
