Rimmer Posted November 28, 2009 Share Posted November 28, 2009 A giant hole has appeared in the Sukhumvit Road just before the intersection with the Nong Khet Yai traffic lights after Naklua. The incident caused a 3 kilometer tailback of traffic leading into the city. Pattaya, the 28th of November 2009 [PDN]: At 11:00am on the 28th of November reporters were alerted to the traffic lights at Nong Khet Yai on the Sukhumvit Road, following reports that a giant hole had opened up spanning the width of an entire lane. It was further stated that a motorcyclist had been injured after crashing into the hole. At the scene reporters discovered that a 3 by 1 meter section of the Sukhumvit Road had caved in creating a 2 meter deep hole. Due to the uncertainty surrounding the safety of the rest of the roadway the usually 3 lane road was cut down to 1 lane from shortly after the time of the incident. Due to it being a weekend there is an extraordinary amount of traffic flow on the Sukhumvit Road, meaning the incident created a 3 kilometer tailback leading into the city from Bangkok. Mr Phachon Leuangoon age 21, was the man who had been involved in the accident, he explained that as he was riding his motorbike towards Pattaya the roadway collapsed underneath him, making him fall of his bike. Mr Leuangoon sustained some minor injuries to his arms and legs but was ultimately lucky not to have crashed into the hole as was previously thought. Officers from the Technical Department of Pattaya came to the scene to investigate the damage and assess how to fix the situation as quickly as possible to allow traffic flow to return to normal. I bet if you Google it, you will find some even in Germany...and you know what sticklers they are for engineering and quality. I thought the pictures on the Pattaya Daily News website particularly good, in each pic there is a guy shown helpfully pointing at the hole in case anyone cant see it in the picture... Pattaya, November 30 [PATTAYA ONE NEWS] : Last week we reported on a hole in the Sukumvit Road which appeared and was lucky not to have claimed any victims. We can now report that the hole has been repaired and extensive tests are now underway in conjunction with the Pattaya Water Station to understand why the hole occurred and the possibility of another hole appearing in the future. Using radar equipment to analyze the foundations of the road, it was determined that the installation of water drainage pipes across the Sukumvit Road had caused the influx of water around the space created by the pipe. The sand layer of the road was weakened to the point where the hole was created. Because of this, checks of the entire area are now underway and further roadworks will occur if similar problems with the sand layer are found elsewhere. The work is being personally overseen by the Pattaya Mayor, Khun Itipon, who assures motorists that the checks will be made as quickly as possible and the man who was slightly injured in the original incident last week will have all his medical expenses covered by the private company who were contracted to re-construct the original road.
