Chiang Mai pins hopes on 'khao soi'

Chiang Mai residents are hoping tourists will consider stopping off in their province now that the Wall Street Journal has carried a story about their famous delicacy khao soi.

Published on November 27, "The Dish" column details the origins of the fiery entree characterised by "yellow egg noodles and chicken in a coconut milk-based red curry soup ... crowned with deep-fried noodles and cilantro leaves", as well as its ingredients and a list of restaurants that are renowned for it. Owner of the Khao Soi Lamduan Faham Restaurant, Netnapas Mahadilok, said residents were proud that their local dish had made a name worldwide. Khao soi has been Chiang Mai City's signature dish since around World War II, she said, and no trip to the northern capital would be complete without trying it at least once. She also hoped that the article would bring back tourists.

Meanwhile, the US consulate general in Thailand said since the newspaper had a large number of readers in the United States among other countries, the article should definitely entice visitors to Chiang Mai.
