IMAGINE:

A woman plays a slot machine/one-armed-bandit and puts in a total of € 50 (ca US$ 75) of her own money.

The man she's with pulled the lever and activated the machine.

The woman walks off with € 2 million (US$ 2,91).

Now what in this true story?

What's fair...?

The Judge had to step in and made a decision but how would YOU decide ? :)

If I were the woman I would pay the man generously for his time.

Maybe even 60 dollars an hour.

There was a case like this in Holland some years ago.

A woman won nearly a million Euro in the local state owned casino.

She was there with a friend, she used her money to feed two machines, friend pushed the buttons of one machine.

Indeed the judge in Rotterdam decided that the man was "working" for the woman at that time.

So he should be compensated for his time.

He got 2 hours at € 60 per hour, € 120 in total.

The funny thing was that this man got a reminder from the tax office.

Please pay us 52% of the € 120 extra income, 15% tax on gambling and the rest income tax.

At the end of the year he found out that because of this payment, he came out in a higher tax-class.

Which cost him additional income tax.

The woman also got a note from the local tax office.

She had to pay employers fees for the man, social security payments and had to register in the local trade office.

Besides that she also paid 15% gambling tax.

By a decision of the high court she paid no income tax on the gambling gains.

Why did she had to register in the trade office ? :D ...Oh I see, because she was supposed to be an employer at that time; silly Judgement.

The big question remains:

are they still friends ? :)

I think it's lousy behavior by the woman; she should have paid him a share, at least 10%.

Okay, you ask your friend to buy you a lottery ticket while he/she is in town.

Scenario #1.

You win top prize, other than the usual comradly gesture are you committed to give a proportion of your prize money?

Scenario #2.

You win a prize of a couple of thousand, then what's your commitment?

Scenario #3.

You lose, what should you receive from your friend?

If it's a game of pure chance involving no skill other than pulling the lever/pushing the button/buying a random ticket why should the operator expect anything other than a token gesture?

:D Scenario #3 is no option; in 1 and 2 however an honest person would give 10%.

It's common practice that a finder of money or high valued object gets 10% but not in all cases.

I suppose it depends on the one who won something; after all he wouldn't have won anything if his pal didn't buy him his lottery ticket at his request-or forgot to give it to him and found out later he won $ 1 Million.....-

than what ? :)

It may become even more bizar:

in my country a woman started a court case against the Postal Code Lottery. Once every while an enormous price is drawn -€ 20-25 Million- and a certain Postal Code is the winner but only people who bought tickets (on their house/street number) can win of course.

The woman didn't buy any ticket (it's played automatically every month) and she claimed she was suffering from nasty diseases because the Lottery didn't tell her to buy tickets. :D

She lost. :D

The article mentioned they got a 80/20 split by the judge, not 50/50, as one might think from hearing 'share-ing it'.

Correct; that's why I asked....: ".......how would YOU decide ?" :)

I guess you failed to see my point. That is alright.

I think I did...not being familiar with all that English/British/Ozzie/American/Singaporean/South African English slang you guys often use :D

I better hurry; still have a lot to learn :)
