Not sure of where you are boarding.

If you are departing from the Uk, it will have to go in the hold.

Same with umbrellas.

boarding from singapore, any problem?

It's been a few years but I've had no problems checking them in.

Recommend you pack them in a tube and seal the ends. I had one rod arrive with broken eyelets.

You could be asked to sign a damage waiver at the check in desk.
