Clever and - it seems - true. I understand that some people plan for cafe or wayside stops if they're going more than 30 or 40 miles. (Presumably, this doesn't apply to the motorways!) It must be a heck of a time for those people when they decide to take their cars over to the continent for their first big driving tour.

That is because in England you can drive around in circles for days and nobody really knows where they are....

Eventually, you drive past one of these and stop for instructions.

But, the regulars in the pub will all be pissed and disagree about which direction to send you. You'll accept the advice of the least pissed occupant and head off again.

After hours of meaningless travel you'll finally stop at some nice lady's gate and she'll invite you in for tea. After a fresh belly full of scones and tea you'll head off again with a more positive outlook.

When the evening light starts to fade you'll be forced to find some place to spend the night... And not what you had expected.

In the morning, after shaking the chicken feathers from your blanket, you'll hike to the top of a hill to get a better perspective of the landscape.

And you'll discover you are about 14 km from where you started from two days before.

Random Fact

Today is the day that Colonel Sir Neville Chamberlain of the British Army garrisons of India, is accredited to have invented the game of snooker.

I guess it was all happening in the officers mess on 17th April 1875

.

Yeah the guy will not have a headache anytime soon..........

It was today, in 1975, when the Khmer Rouge completed the takeover of Phnom Phen and claimed an END to the Cambodian Civil war. The famous American embassy evac had taken place five days earlier.

Hellish genocide ensued.

Earth-friendly grenades proposed

A group of scientists suggests the little throwable bombs could be designed so that they at least go easy on the environment while wiping out its human inhabitants.

The greener grenades’concept stems from a study of the environmental impact of grenades conducted by researchers at the Royal Institute of Technology in Stockholm, Sweden. The scientists, Elisabeth Hochschorner and colleagues, found that grenades harm the planet considerably both during war and peace.

They also suggested that replacing plastic for copper could make grenades easier to recycle after they explode.

The study is to be published in The Journal of Chemical Technology and Biotechnology

^Come on greenies, invent something useful in the armaments line. What about biodegradable landmines - save a fortune in post-war cleanups. :)

Well, that's nice of you. Our diggers died in droves saving YOUR shores!!!!!

Yes, it may seem a little insensitive of KO, but I would think that it is probably because he doesn't understand the importance of ANZAC day to most Ozzies and Kiwis in remembrance of those fallen diggers and returned servicemen who gave so much to secure our future. Just a bit of bad luck about the coincidence in timing of these two significant nationalistic events.

This is a strange one, would never have thought it about NZ.

Speshully when droves crossing the ditch for work..

The Government is expected to cut the top tax rate from 38 per cent to 33 per cent in next week's Budget announcement, putting it in line with company and trust rates.

"With the second lowest tax wedge in the OECD, it is hard to justify

borrowing to pay for tax cuts at the top," Dr Norman said.

"The Government misleads people when it compares our headline tax rates with other countries without taking this into account."

The top five:

Belgium: 55.2 per cent

Hungary: 53.4

Germany: 50.9

France: 49.2

Austria: 47.9

The average: 36.5 per cent

The bottom five:

Iceland: 28.3 per cent

Australia: 26.7

South Korea: 19.7

New Zealand: 18.4

Mexico: 15.3

If they were our shores, we would have built a pier and layed on Ice cream ( true fact )

Did you know that Hong kong actor Chow Yun-fat, was born on the same day as Napoleon Bonaparte was proclaimed Emperor of France ?

The Chinese race age well................

I saw video on Telly.

NZ company, Fisher & Paykel, that relocated to Thailand is doing well.

Thai workers pumping out washing machine every 30 seconds.

Refrigerator every 48 seconds.

Must be some fast workers there.

Mind you, they get good pay...... $NZ2.00 an hour...... :) .....44 TBaht about.

Conditions OK, bus to work, free meals.

Frankly, in my opinion peess poor.

I guess F&P are not alone, seems exploitation to me.

They're a good product - let's hope the standard remains the same. You can't blame many of the companies for moving offshore though - it's a matter of competitive survival. With F & P, though, they have a distinctive competency (their reputation for the quality of their products) which translates to them not needing to compete with many of the whitegoods manufacturers on a dollar for dollar basis. All the same, it would be harsh to judge them as being greedy without knowing all of the reasons behind the move. It may be that even at their market niche, they need to economise on inputs to remain competitive within that niche. Alternatively, it may be a strategic move based upon a forecast that the quality of cheaper manufacturers' goods will gain in reputation over time and leave them outpriced without a distinctive competency. Who knows? I really do not like seeing this mass exodus of manufacturers from our shore, but in most cases, it's hard to fault them without having a good understanding of their reasoning.

I'm more pished-off with American companies that have claimed so many Australian companies over the years (often by hostile takeover). I make a real effort to buy goods made by Australian owned companies...

...but I've still got to have my Vegemite!

I am pished off with Breville.

They do not carry spares.

My Express cooker needs a new pressure ring.

They told me, more or less, "Tough luck,"

Looks like I am gunna be a china cheapie buyer now.

FACT.

Buy good stuff at yer own risk.

Let them go off shore and sell their junk off shore. I'd tax their goods out of the local market, let the people that stay and provide jobs sell their products at home.

"The Straight Dope" site just informed that snipers allow for the rotation of the Earth when sniping. :o

At 1,000 yards the Coriolis deflection is small but not necessarily trivial. Una computed that at the latitude of Sacramento, a bullet traveling 1,000 yards would be deflected about three inches to the right.

The Straight Dope: How does the earth's rotation affect the path of a bullet?

Body cream with chilli in it really gets quite hot.

I think you should mention the Consumer Guarantees Act to them. If they sell you something, they also need be able to sell you any parts that the machine may need from time to time.
