Land Of The Living Dolls

Land of the living dolls: Feminism aimed to liberate women. Instead, it's spawned a promiscuous generation who believe that their bodies are the only passport to success

For more than 200 years, feminists have been criticising the way that artificial images of feminine beauty are held up as the ideal to which women should aspire. From Mary Wollstonecraft's A Vindication Of The Rights Of Woman in 1792, to Naomi Wolf's The Beauty Myth in 1991, brilliant and angry women have demanded a change in these ideals.

Yet far from fading away, these ideals have become more powerful than ever. What's more, throughout much of our society, the image of female perfection to which women are encouraged to aspire has become more and more defined by sexual allure.

Of course, wanting to be sexually attractive has always been and will always be a natural desire for men and women. But in this generation, a certain view of female sexuality has become celebrated, and it's one defined by the terms of the sex industry.

The narrowing of what it means to be sexy - slender with large breasts on show - arises from the way that the sex industry has moved from the margins to the mainstream of our society.

This is thanks to the resurgence of glamour modelling; to the sudden growth of lapdancing clubs in town centres; from a new fashion for poledancing, to the popularity of memoirs of prostitution that suggest selling sex is a great way for a woman to earn her living; and, above all, to the much greater presence of pornography in the lives of many young people, driven by the internet.

This highly sexualised culture is often positively celebrated as a sign of women's liberation and empowerment.

I've noticed it, and I agree with the slant of the article.

I wouldn't single out Britain, although the Brits do have a bit of a reputation now.

It's a shame. What is sadder, is that the boys are taken in by it too....which empowers the wannbe bimbo's and so on in a circle of pathetic shallowness.

Do I recall correctly....was there a phase in the late 80's, early 90's when all the blond jokes came out in rebellion to this trend? The gist being better to have a woman you can talk to.

It seems the sexy blond fad won out.

Give me an intelligent Asian any day.

nb; the women in those photos, especially the 2nd photo, don't do much for me at all.

Further edit upon looking at the photos again: The woman in the 2nd pic would have to buy me a hel_l of a lot of bourbon before I'd honour her with my intimacy.

I would even venture you have them standing at your door with their money in hand, awaiting the honour of your intimacy. :)

The problem is that in North America and much of Europe it is all artificial... look but don't touch. None of the women in those photos appeal to me in the slightest. I KNOW what is waiting for me in Thailand and the artificial blonde bimbos leave me cold. But, maybe I'm just jaded.

Nuthin to do but sleep in the sun

And nuthin to think about but havin fun

And nuthin to eat but filet mignon

And I’m startin to think that I’m jaded

Nuthin in my pocket but dividend cheques

Nuthin to come home to but all kinds of sex

And I’d try to explain but it’s too complex

And so is life when you’re jaded.

Nuthin in my cellar but vintage wine

Nuthin to get that ain’t already mine

Like those 20 young starlets all waiting in line

But they’ll just have to wait cause I’m jaded

Nuthin to watch but my bank account grow

Outside the Riviera there’s no place to go

And no one to go with but that pretty Jo Lo

And I might break the date cause I’m jaded.

Yeah, I’m overloved and I’m overfed

And you say I should settle down with you instead

Well I may be tired but, baby, I ain’t dead

And I’ll never be that jaded

I agree with Harcourt there, the second one looks utterly hideous and the first three only marginally better. I prefer women who look naturally human rather than the product of a 16 year old graphic designer fed into a plastic molding machine.

<edit : but the whole purpose of the exercise is to get their pics in the papers. 21st century whores.>

At least you read the article, while the others were all studiously avoiding the rather juicy legs of the centre barbie doll. :)

There was a story in the Mail a few months ago about an intelligent, middle-class girl who could have gone to university and had a fulfilling job, but all she wanted to be was a WAG... so desperately, apparently, that she ended up with a West Indian assistant coach of some football team or another, who turned out to be a violent individual who knifed her to death when she left him. Very sad story.

Isn't the point of feminism that women can be whateever they want, even vapid bimbo who trade on their looks? In which case seems it has been a success.

I KNOW what is waiting for me in Thailand and the artificial blonde bimbos leave me cold

And Ian, absolutely nothing to do with your CAD having more clout in Thailand right? gawd!!! :D:)

What are WAG and CAD?

By the way, I would do it to any of these women if I found myself alone in a room with them and they were willing. I guess that I have no self contol. :)

I think WAG means Wives and Girlfriends, usually referring to the camp followers who tag along after sporting teams.

CAD sounds like Canadian dollars.

WAG is a term coined during the last world cup football event, stands for Wives And Girlfriends (of the players) & now it seems a viable career option for many "glamour" models or wannabees. They hang around the clubs where the footballers frequent & try to hook a footie player, some of them have been through several players of different teams but they still seem to get more so the guys clearly aren't bothered.

I'm all for women doing what they want, if they want to be a rocket scientist then go for it, if they want to be a pole dancer, the that's ok too. To me the point of feminism is to have freedom, without needing permission from a male family member or husband or worrying about a damaged reputation (as was common in the bad old days, a damaged reputation, even based on false accusation, pretty much destroyed a womans life).

As long as the decision is theirs & they aren't coerced or forced into any of the more seemly trades/lifestyles then I don't see what these women do or how they chose to portray themselves should matter.

As long as the choice is theirs.

CAD = Canadian Dollar

:)

I'm surprised this thread has lasted so long. If the women in question were just the run-of-the-mill fat, ugly, homely types this would have been closed down immediately. But since the women look more like hookers with too much make-up and boob jobs it is OK to slam them. I mean jump all over them. No, I mean to criticize them on their looks. Yeah, that's it.

This is Outside the Box.

I'll be down to Chiang Mai in a week or two General. Might stay a day or three while a visiting friend sees the sights so we'll have to catch up.

All women closer than a 500 mile radius of my wife are safe from me. :)

I'm not exactly sure what CAD means, other than a short term for Canadian, or in some cases... Canadian dollar. However, a cad is an old English expression for a man who treated women poorly.

The artificial blonde bimbos leave me cold for the fact that they've lost their femininity, of which many Thai women have an excess of... or at least the ones that I associate myself with. And, Boo is correct that my CAD (Canadian dollar) goes a whole lot further in Thailand than it does in Canada. For that reason alone I would rather spend my winters here.

Femininity is an intangible thing that is hard to describe... until you see it. Some women just have a lovely grace about themselves... no matter WHAT age they are. Katherine Hepburn was one of those ladies right up to the day she died. I have a friend who has a tall, Thai wife who is the absolute epitomy of femininism. She just seems to flow as she walks. And, she is a great mother to her daughter and a fine companion to her husband and friends. Despite her flirtatiousness, she never steps over the line of decorum. The bimbos could take lessons from her.

Yes, well regardless, this thread is not about Ian, I think we have plenty of those already cheers.

As for blond bimbos. Everyone makes their choices in life, and if this is the choice these women choose to make given the abundance of opportunities now open to women, well, thats pretty sad and speaks volumes for their upbringing but its still their choice. Just so long as that or others don't infringe on my choice than I can't say I really give a shit. I was fortunate in that I had parents that valued things like intelligence, independence and consideration over selfishness, appearance and stupidity which is why all of three of their daughters did not turn out be vapid bimbos but rather intelligent, interesting women.

As a blond man who married a vivacious, funny, intelligent blond with 36 to 40 inch front end in 1965, we've seen these trends. The eldest daughter is a blond, brainy BA-MEd feminist-teacher. Her sisters are blond, brainy, top-heavy. I don't get the OP's message. I met a financial analyst recently. She's funny, smart, tall, beautiful, stacked, and feminist. Happily married to a Thai.

....snip yawn twaddle

Oh dear & yet again Ian has to take a topic totally off tangent with his ramblings about white women. Really, get a new record, you sound like a boring old broken down one & I am bored of it. Yes we get it, Thai women good, white women bad, I'm sure the appeal has nothing to do with your economic power over them, What. So. Ever. :)

And your perspective is from the exact opposite point of view... all farang men in Thailand are bad. I've never said anything against white women in general... only the artificial, nasty ones. Unless you hadn't noticed, I DID mention Katherine Hepburn. I always thought she WAS a white woman.

And your perspective is from the exact opposite point of view... all farang men in Thailand are bad.

Wrong Ian, you tell me when, apart from when I am replying to yet another ridiculous post by someone who has a major chip on their shoulder about white women & a massive delusion about their appeal to thai women, that I even mention farang men in any of my posts.

Contrary to what you seem so desperate to believe that you have to make it up, I have not posted my opinion on farang men in Thailand, so sorry to burst your bubble but as far as I am concerned they can do what they hel_l they want & as long as they are within the law, act like human beings & keep their attitudes & baggage laden issues with white women away from me then they are ok by me.

So don't you dare try to tar me with your nasty brush. You are the one (amoungst a few others) who has to mention western women in derogatory terms at every opportunity but if you plan to keep doing so then expect me to have something to say on it.

I don't make derogatory comments about anyone, Boo. But, I do state facts. If there are inequities in life then I'll point them out. I've never taken a shot at you, but you've certainly taken a lot at me. I have no problem with women of any kind in any place. But, I will report what actually happens. Some people don't like to hear the truth. I'm just as harsh on men if I see something they are doing that is wrong.

If you've got the time I'd like to see you dig up any topic where I've spoken ill of western women in general. I love all women, everywhere: young, old, big or small... so long as they are interesting. Despite what you might believe I have at least 20 platonic friendships with western women, and their ages vary from 19 to 72. I'm even good friends with my first ex-wife and her husband.

However, who I am sexually attracted to is nobody's business but my own. But, it's certainly not women under the age of 20, or women who aren't interested in me.

Taking issue with the article quoted in the OP:

"Land of the living dolls: Feminism aimed to liberate women. Instead, it's spawned a promiscuous generation who believe that their bodies are the only passport to success." NO. The old masculinism did that. Feminism liberates those who choose to be more than a Barbie Doll.

A feminist wrote a book about backlash - mainstream male-dominated media had rolled back many of the gains Frieden, Wolf, and others had fought for.

In order for the vapid blonde bimbo thing to work, there has to be plenty of stupid, gullible men around to fall for it. Unfortunately the lowest common denominator is far too common.

I am not a bigot. I appreciate bimbos of each and every persuasion.

There's bimboism and bimboism though. Some have taken it to the next level.
