Need A Secure Thai Proxy Or Vpn

Featured Replies

I have just taken up employment that will mean I will be travelling most of the time. I currently have various accounts setup here in Thailand that I can manage via Internet Bangkok. Unfortunately most of the banks said that I will not be able to access internet banking while out of the country, so I am looking for a secure Thai proxy or VPN to use. I would be willing to pay a monthly fee.

Does anyone know of a Thai company that can supply me with a secure local solution?

Not sure where u want to travel. But my thai accounts work just fine in the US, Europe and other Asian countries. I havent tried in Australia though.

Mostly to countries that they deem high risk, Africa, Middle East etc.

PayPal limited my account the last time I used it from outside Thailand and Kasikorn told me that my account would probably be locked if I tried to access it. So I would need to buy/rent a proxy that will make it look as though I am located in Thailand.

I don't think you will find one, it is illegal to use Proxy or VPN's in thailand, So I would imagine it would be illegal for a company to set up such a service.

No, it's illegal to use proxies or VPN's to bypass government blocks. But perfectly legal for business.

I have a huge list of open proxies that I can use in Thailand but I don't want to use them for security concerns.

Paypal is not a bank - they are wannabe's. They will even limit your account when you use your PC on the bathroom.

I do not think U will have problems with Kasikorn's onlinebanking in the middle east. I have been to Dubai a few times and accessed my account just fine.

Check out www.strongvpn.com.

Works anywhere in the world.

I am currently in Jordan and can acess my Kasikorn acount OK

I take it you need a Thai-based IP address? If you have access to a computer you can leave on in Thailand while you are away, you could set up your own VPN with Hamachi and use it to secure remote desktop connection. Installs in a couple of minutes with minimal mucking around. Free.

Yes hamachi is an excellent choice.

But if your company can install VPN Server, all of your employees can connect to Company's LAN no matter where they are.

I use www.cloudnext.com, £10+vat a month,

sudo apt-get install squid

nano /etc/squid.conf and add

acl localhost src 42.43.0.0/255.255.255.0 (where 42.43 are the first digits of your external IP - use whats my ip websites etc..)

/etc/init.d/squid start

then just change your browser to VPS-IP:3128. Alternatively use putty to tunnel localhost:3128 to vps:3128 and then you dont need to setup any squid rules.

I highly recommend www.vpnmaster.com it is very fast and cheap.

Are you all happy to use proxyservers for internet banking?

I ask because I read elsewhere that for security reasons it isn't advisable.

I have the same problem as the OP, actually.

I have used Thai based open proxies for accessing financially sensitive sites before, and am not too comfortable with the idea. I actually use a hospital in Udon Thani for routing over but it isn't an ideal solution. Coming the other way, I have a VPN with a physical machine located in London but it is currently much harder to make myself appear in Thailand when I am not, than it is to make myself appear in London, when I am not.

The rationale is simple, and many people may have been affected by it. It isn't anything to do with Thai Government paranoia, but with the increasing use of Geolocation software which means that ordinary banking and card transactions - even internet purchases - carried out away from the jurisdiction that the other party expects the card to be in, are increasingly flagged as suspicious for no better reason than you are not at home. This happens to me particularly whenever VISA is involved, but also recently with a US based company when I bought training materials. I used my USD / US Bank based, UK home addressed card to buy something online from a serviced apartment wifi connection location in Germany. In a way, I'm not surprised something like that gets their antennae up, but it is legit and flagging stuff like that every time would make cards unusable.

So if anyone *does* know of a secure service in Thailand, then feel free to PM me.

I worked for 2 years in Nigeria.........and after about 2-3 attempts to access my Kasikorn Bank account.......it got stopped. :(

By the way........If I use a proxy, does it show emails as originating from the proxy?

If you use webmail, yes, otherwise, no, you would need a vpn server for that.

If you Google for "vpn thailand" there are plenty of hits discussing how to get out of Thailand, but none address getting a VPN server IN Thailand. I suspect though, as the OP's problem is accessing Thai banks from "troublesome" areas, any VPN server in a "safe" country ought to solve the problem.

I recently searched for a VPN solution for myself and found that https://www.vpn4all.com/ offered the best options at the best price. VPN servers in many countries, changing between them as often as you like, under US $10 per month (for up to 50G traffic/month which is more than most normal people would use, but an unlimited option for US $17/m). Windows client only for the moment but an Android client is under development. Free trial available. Paypal and the major credit cards.

Heard good things about these people.

I don't have any problems accessing my Kasikorn account through a VPN (that makes me appear to be in France, some other countries may, admittedly, pose more of a challenge).

Pretty good point. But I think it would only apply if the VPN prevented true point to point connections - and I don't think it does, or can even do that. So while the VPN makes it appear to Kasikornbank (or whatever) that you are in Thailand, and that everything coming from your laptop is coming from that Thai IP, it doesn't prevent a https (SSL) connection between your computer and the Kbank. That means that you're talking over a secure channel - the VPN provider can't break the encryption, and so in effect they can't listen in.

The only thing you have to be VERY careful about is the SSL certificate - if you get a browser warning that the certificate of your bank is expired or can't be verified - do the right thing and stay away. The certificate - checked with a 3rd party authority - is your guarantee that you're talking to who you think you're talking to. Without a valid, verified certificate the entity on the other end could be anyone.

The last time I was in the US no problem using SCB bank online. I wasn't aware that was a problem with Thai banks.

I am using Super Vpn and I am very satisfied with their service.

A Thai VPN account allow you to connect on our server located in the Thailand which provide you dedicated IP address from Thailand. All traffic is encrypted using PPTP or L2TP IPSec encryption so you are 100% safe and secure to surf anonymous and visit everything on Internet.

I use "Viscosity"

AFAICS that's just a client - you still need a server - correct me if I'm wrong...

Correct its just a client for Mac, you would still need a provider.

I use "Witopia" with Viscosity.

check out: http://www.witopia.net/index.php/products/

It comes with a list of about 80 servers all around the world to use. When I'm online I can scroll down the list and connect to the server/country I prefer. There are even a couple of 256 bit encrypted servers on the list.

It isn't free but it also isn't very expensive.

What do you think about "Tor" as a alternative? It's free and Wikileaks recommends it ;^)

Wouldn't use Tor for any banking or anything personal. Lots of exit nodes are evil, and alot of websites dont always handle ssl properly throughout their entire sites. If you can not setup a vpn at home use a trusted and well reviewed vpn provider.
