I want to apply for Thai driving license, but my International driving license is expired.

So what will be next step?

Should I go back and get new International driving license? if not, how I can proceed in applying Thai driving license.

Any help is highly appreciated!

Assuming the rest of your paperwork is incheck, You can still apply for a Thai licence in the usual fashion, the only difference being without the Internation Drivers Permit you will be required to to the licencing theory test.

Not true. There is no such thing as an International Driving License only International Driving Permit. If it says IDL its a scam. In Chiang Mai they only require an excepted driving License NOT an IDL OR IDP. There is no written test only eye/color/reflects.

Ok, it was hardly 30 to 60 Minutes process. I got the license. I applied at the Department of Land transportation (Opposite to JJ market)

1. Copy of passport - there is a copy center on second floor, she know what pages... and speaks decent English

2. Address proof - I got work permit

3. Doctor certificate - if you don't have one, there will be bike drivers near the floor, just say them "Clinic" they will take you to clinic, pay 60 Baht to doctor (5 Min only and bike driver will wait) and pay 60 to Bike driver.

4. Copy of your license.

Go to information counter on 2nd floor, they will give the form (you Basically no need to fill anything, don't even bother to take some Thais with you) and just write your name on the form. The staff at information counter will hand you Coupon number and for foreigners you have to wait at counter 17 and 18. There will be very few foreigners so you no need wait for long.

The officer at counter 17 or 18 will check your documents and name only. Then the officer will ask you to go 3rd floor for eye testing (You will be given passport and eye check form)

Go to third floor information counter and give that form and passport u got from officer. The officer at information counter will give you Coupon code, and ask you to sit in the hall and watch video for eye tests. There will be simple 3 tests. (if you don't understand the video, there will be written wall papers inside the test room in English)

After the test is finished in 3rd floor, go back to information counter in 3rd floor, the officer will take out 1 form and give the test passed form with passport

And now go to second floor information counter again and get new coupon code.. and u will get 17 or 18 counter... the office will take photo and in 5 minutes u will get card.

Easy!!!

Good info MS.

The office at JJ is well known for issuing Thai licences to holders of certain foreign licences without the need for an IDP (certainly UK and Aussie, probably US and other Euro Zone countries too).

Local offices may not be so accommodating (I don't believe the law has actually changed, just that JJ have seen sense) :)

Anywho, sounds like you guys in Chang Mai have it easy when it comes to Licences.

I think you don't need IDP at all, your local license should be enough.

And I forgot to mention the fee, its 205 Baht..
